Return of the New California
vanguard

Nathan Lee Roberts
& Duncan Arnot
Meyers
|
|
 |
As someone who
has the privilege to taste the benchmark wines of
Italy, France and California, there is no doubt in
my mind Arnot-Roberts is one of the world’s great
wineries.
— Antonio Galloni, Vinous
Arnot-Roberts represents a
forward-thinking era of winemaking in the US and the
scramble to secure them on release is testament to
their quality and popularity.
— Matthew Luczy, Decanter (July 2020)

are falling over themselves to get at their
minuscule production.

Duncan Arnot
Meyers and Nathan
Lee Roberts are making some of the most
exciting wines in California right now, though they
insist they simply make wines to please their own
palates. The wines are restrained and elegant –
impeccably balanced; fresh and alive with silky
textures and electric energy – a world apart from
the stereotypical overripe, over-oaked character of
Californian wines.
|
Childhood buddies, Duncan and Nathan were raised on
Napa’s sleepy east side. They formed a fast friendship
after meeting on the first day of third grade, and their
shared youth saw them exploring the Californian hills and
backroads on bike – something they still do today, just
with a focus on vineyards. California kids through and
through, they share a deep love for the region. Perhaps
this is what’s given them the incredible knack for
tracking down exceptional vineyards in superb, albeit
obscure, locations.
As with many other young winemakers, purchasing
vineyards is simply not an option for the duo. That they
work with predominantly purchased fruits only makes their
consistent qualitative success even more mind-boggling.
They work closely with passionate vineyard owners and
viticultural consultants, and encourage their vineyard
partners to farm organically, with as little impact on the
environment as possible.
Arnot-Roberts started off as a passion project (and in
many ways it still is), with just a single barrel in 2001.
In the beginning, their intention was simply to make good
Californian wine that pleased their own palate. When the
exceptionally cool 2005 vintage yielded wines with a more
austere profile, lean fruit and higher acids, Duncan and
Nathan weren’t worried about critics’ reviews and ratings
(which at the time skewed towards fruit-dense, heavily
oaked Californian wines). They were thrilled – these were
wines they loved to drink. From that point on, they
focused their efforts on seeking out the best cool-climate
sites they could find.

Nathan and Duncan in the cellar
|
The duo finds inspiration in bottles from the Old World:
Jura’s Jacques Puffeney, Blaufränkisch from Austrian
producer Moric, and Syrah benchmarks such as Cornas’
Thierry Allemand and Côte-Rôtie’s Domaine Jamet. The
influence is evident, but they’re not trying to make
copies of the Old World in California. “We believe
California can deliver wines that have similar
characteristics while having all of what California can
offer,” says Duncan.
Arnot-Roberts produces a highly diverse range of cuvées
– spanning different terroirs, and different varietals: a
few barrels of Chardonnays, Pinot Noirs, Syrahs, Cabernets
are released each vintage, along with less widely planted
varieties such as Trousseau, Ribolla Gialla and Gamay.
“We’ve never limited what this winery was going to be
about,” Nathan says. “It’s a reflection of our own taste
in wine, why wouldn’t I make wine from the varieties I
love?” Trousseau grown on the Californian coast? No
problem.
What’s impressive is that every wine is true to
Arnot-Roberts’ mission to produce distinctive, site-driven
wines – and every wine is exemplary.

Nathan examining grapes from the harvest
|
Duncan and Nathan place great emphasis on “nailing the
pick”. i.e., the perfect moment for harvest, when
ripeness, acidity and flavours intersect at their optimal
points within a harmonious whole. In the cellar, they
aren’t formulaic about the way they work, preferring
instead to adapt the winemaking style to preserve their
wines’ distinctive voices. Broadly speaking though, they
keep the winemaking process as simple and low-intervention
as possible.
While each wine gets its own vinification regime, the
general technique includes indigenous yeast fermentations,
little to no new oak, and whole-cluster inclusion for red
wines. They are then aged in neutral wood for different
lengths of time depending on grape varieties and vintage
conditions. Fining and filtration are avoided, with very
rare exceptions for certain whites. When new oak barrels
are used, they are handmade by Nathan himself, whose
father founded one of California’s only American-owned
cooperages.
 |
Rather than
emphasizing power, concentration and heavy fruit
flavors, the Arnot-Roberts wines are graceful and
relatively low in alcohol.
— Eric Asimov, The New York
Times
Elegant, balanced single vineyard wines from one of
California’s most exciting small wineries…
— Jamie Goode
|
|
Arnot-Roberts have shown that California wines can not
only shine at the table, but also express the
individuality of the sites from which they come. Their
wines are fascinating to follow as they age and develop in
complexity, from post-bottling youthfulness to the glories
of a fully mature and harmonious bottle. We just doubt
you’ll be able to wait that long – they are that alluring.
Twice a year, we receive an email from Nathan containing
a tiny offer of the upcoming season’s allocation. These
are highly sought-after wines; we don’t get much, as the
wines are sold out almost all domestically and exported to
just a few select countries. We’re extremely grateful that
Singapore is one of the few privileged markets that gets a
direct allocation alongside Japan, Canada and the UK.

Arnot-Roberts’ iconic,
instantly recognisable labels quicken the pulse of
many a wine lover, and each time we receive new
releases from them, it’s cause for celebration. The
fact that these wines are just downright delicious
belies their graceful nuances and perfumed, layered
elegance – and they show yet again why they’re one
of the standard-bearers for a new paradigm of
California fine wine. With their limited production,
intensifying acclaim, and ever-escalating demand,
the wines from these New California icons are never
available for long.

California
is a hotbed of talent these days. Even so, I can't
think of too many producers who excel with so many
different varieties and wines as Duncan Arnot and
Nathan Roberts do.

bottles or more
S$ 98 / 750 ml
|
[Notes for
2019 vintage:] “The
2019 Chardonnay Watson Ranch is open-knit
and seductive. Orchard fruit, chamomile,
spice and dried herbs all meld together in
a pliant Chardonnay that offers a striking
mix of textural richness and energy.
Watson Ranch is the southernmost vineyard
in Napa Valley, a cool-climate pocket that
yields a Chardonnay of real distinction.”

Trout
Gulch Vineyard Chardonnay,
Santa Cruz Mountains 2020
|
S$ 105
/ 750 ml
|
“The 2020 Chardonnay Trout Gulch Vineyard
is laser focused and vibrant, as it is in
its best years. Crushed rocks, mint, white
pepper, lemon peel and white flowers all
race out of the glass. Bright saline notes
extend the finish effortlessly. The 2020
is very nicely done, and also a great
example of this Santa Cruz Mountains
site.” AG 94

Sanford
& Benedict Vineyard Chardonnay,
Santa Rita Hills 2020
|
S$ 120
/ 750 ml
|
“The 2020 Chardonnay Sanford &
Benedict captures all the magic of this
iconic Sta. Rita Hills site. Ample, creamy
and inviting, the 2020 is beautifully
textured from start to finish. Apricot,
lemon confit, white flowers, mint and
marzipan build as the 2020 opens with a
bit of air. Arnot-Roberts pulls fruit from
the old-vine section of S&B, which was
planted in 1971 with own-rooted vines.” AG

Manchester Ridge
Vineyard Pinot Noir,
Mendocino Ridge 2020 |
S$ 113
/ 750 ml
|
[Winemakers’
notes:] “2020 afforded
us a one-time opportunity to work with the
Manchester Ridge vineyard, located in the
Mendocino Ridge AVA on the border of Sonoma
and Mendocino counties. This remote site is
situated 2,000 feet above Point Arena, and
is planted a mere 3.5 miles from the Pacific
Ocean. The wine is light in body and bursts
from the glass with soaring aromatics of
crystalline red fruit and spice, followed by
saturated but translucent flavors of damp
coastal forest and sea breeze. 8 barrels
produced.”

|
Peter Martin Ray Pinot
Noir,
Santa Cruz Mountains 2020
|
S$ 134
/ 750 ml
|
[Winemakers’
notes:] “41 year old
vines head-trained and dry-farmed in
Franciscan shale at 1,400, in the Santa
Cruz Mountains above Saratoga. Fermented
100 % whole cluster with native yeast, and
basket pressed to neutral French oak
barrels and aged for 10 months. The hardy
nature of this rugged, low-yielding
mountain vineyard bears fruit with
generous flavor, color and structure. The
2020 sings with hallmark aromas of native
chaparral and baking spices and follows
through with bright flavors of zesty
Rainier cherry underpinned by deep earthy
minerality. 8 barrels produced.”

Syrah, California 2020
|
S$ 93 / 750 ml for 3
bottles or more
S$ 98 / 750 ml
|
“One of the highlights in this range, the
2020 Syrah (California) is bright, punchy
and explosive. Inky dark fruit, spice,
licorice and leather are all kicked up in
this juicy, exuberant Syrah. In 2020, a
large percentage of the fruit is from Santa
Maria, hence the broader California
designation this year. Floral and savory
accents linger. The 2020 is flat-out
delicious.” AG 93

Clary
Ranch Syrah,
Sonoma Coast 2019
|
S$ 120
/ 750 ml
|
“The 2019 Syrah Clary Ranch is a
powerful, driving wine that is going to
need time to be at its very best.
Red-toned fruit, rose petal, spice,
lavender and blood orange are some of the
signatures. The Clary Ranch is among the
wines in this lineup that is marked by the
decision to pick 7-10 days earlier than
originally planned because of approaching
fires. That turned out to be a smart
decision, because waiting just a few days
would have resulted in a total loss. The
2019 will require time in bottle to
soften, which it did start to do with few
hours of aeration.” AG 93+

Que
Syrah Vineyard Syrah,
Sonoma Coast 2019
|
S$ 134
/ 750 ml
|
“The 2019 Syrah Que Syrah Vineyard, from
Nathan Roberts’ home ranch, is bold,
powerful and explosive. Inky dark
blue/purplish fruit, lavender, spice,
menthol and gravel wrap together in a
deep, potent Syrah that is going to need
time to unwind. There is a lot to the
2019, but readers have to be patient.
There is so much personality and character
here.” AG 94+
“Such an inviting, peppered nose of black
peppercorn, hot paprika and turmeric with
notes of blackberries, black cherries and
blackcurrants in the background. Medium-to
full-bodied, this immediately pulls you in
and does not let go. So much depth and
flavor with concentration and consistent
intensity. Sleek. There is such fine
precision here that allows for nuance and
delicacy in the floral and mineral notes,
adding layers and layers of compelling
complexity. One of the best examples of
what syrah is capable of on the Sonoma
Coast. Lovely now, but best after 2024.” JS

Clajeux
Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon,
Chalk Hill 2018
|
S$ 165
/ 750 ml
|
“The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Clajeux
Vineyard is a powerful, savory wine that
expresses all of the character of this Chalk
Hill site. Dark cherry, plum, gravel,
scorched earth, leather and a good bit of
whole cluster savoriness from the 30% stems
give the aromatics tons of presence to play
off the wine's mid-weight structure. This is
a fabulous vintage for the Clajeux.” AG

“A perfumed and inviting nose of
blackberries, blackcurrants and gravel.
Medium-to full-bodied and so fresh and
present on the palate. Well-structured
tannins. There's purity to the expression of
the ripe red and black fruit with bright
minerality and great depth. Such a pleasure
to drink now, but this will age
wonderfully.” JS 96

|
Fellom Ranch
Cabernet Sauvignon,
Santa Cruz Mountains
2018
|
S$ 181
/ 750 ml
|
“The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Fellom Ranch
is the most reticent of the Arnot-Roberts
Cabernets. Intensely savory and earthy,
the 2018 offers quite a bit of intrigue,
but it will require considerable
cellaring. Cedar, spice, tobacco and dried
herbs lend notable complexity to the dark
fruit flavors. The natural concentration
of small berries with little juice and
high solids gives the wine its dense,
brooding feel.” AG 93+
“Blackberry, black cherry and baking spice
on the nose. Full-bodied with firm, grippy
tannins. Dried herbs and spice blend with
a bit of cedar and pine. Earthy and
savory, but still full of fruit. Well
balanced with very good intensity. This
will do well with some age. Best after
2026.” JS 95

Montecillo
Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon,
Sonoma Valley 2018 |
S$ 192
/ 750 ml
|
“The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Montecillo
Vineyard is a wine of notable breadth and
power. Soil, scorched earth, smoke,
tobacco, licorice and incense infuse this
virile Sonoma Cabernet with tremendous
intensity. Here, too, readers have to be
patient as the Montecillo is an
old-school, classically built Cabernet
that absolutely demands cellaring.” AG
