open-quote This is a first rate domaine making consistently high quality wines without fuss.

Fontaine-Gagnard is a Chassagne domaine that has really upped the ante in recent vintages, and has provoked discussion among Burgundy cognoscenti who noticed a shift in style to ever more precise and complex expressions of respective terroirs.

With its pure, elegant wines and enviable vineyard holdings, Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard encapsulates the essence of Chassagne-Montrachet. At the heart of the domaine are three Grand Crus and twelve different premier crus – including such mythic parcels as Le Montrachet, Les Caillerets, and La Romanée. In Céline Fontaine’s intuitive hands, these magnificent terroirs yield supremely poised wines that show why this domaine continues to go from strength to strength.

Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard was established in 1985 by Céline’s parents – Richard Fontaine, a former air force engineer, and Laurence Gagnard, of the Gagnard wine family in Chassagne. Together, they embarked on this new venture, with vineyards that came primarily from Laurence’s family. Eventually, Céline joined them at the domaine and spent a good number of years working alongside them, before taking the reins herself in 2007.

Céline has brought a new energy and outlook to the Burgundian tradition put in place by her parents, from the vineyard through to the cellar. At the domaine, vineyard work follows the principle of lutte raisonnée (“reasoned fight”). This essentially means an organic approach, electing not to use any chemical treatment unless it is absolutely necessary to mitigate a disaster. Such an approach eschews convenience in pursuit of high-quality nature-driven fruit.

While the Fontaines never use more than one-third new oak and no Fontaine-Gagnard white wine spends more than a year in wood, they are very particular about barrels. The domaine’s longtime cooper Tonnellerie Minier, located in nearby Chagny, makes barrels to the family’s specifications, and they are dried out for at least two years before use. This is why there is a slightly toasty fragrant aspect which lends luxurious attractiveness to the wines, and yet it never overpowers the fruit.

We’ve always believed that one can do no better in understanding the terroir of Chassagne-Montrachet than by tasting across the wines from this domaine. The family’s impressive array of vineyards in the commune encompasses both red and white, and spans all cru levels.

Amongst the grand crus, Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard has one of the largest pieces of the smallest grand cru in the Côte de Beaune, “Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet”. Clive Coates named the Fontaine-Gagnard Criots as “one of the very best sources for this tiny grand cru”. The domaine’s other grand crus, the splendid Bâtard-Montrachet and the illustrious Le Montrachet, also come from the Chassagne side of those exalted climats.

The style of the wines at Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard is intense, focused, deep and complex. These are Chassagnes that start out life as classically balanced and accessible, but always with fine expressions of terroir and the underlying structure to age gracefully.

Astute Burgundy lovers know that this domaine is a consistently excellent source of elegant white Burgundy that still offers relatively good value. Since taking over as head of the domaine, Céline has delivered greater finesse, purity and precision with each successive vintage. She’s part of a new generation that has revisited viticulture fundamentals with a passion, fashioning wines that are stylish and alluring yet never lacking in verve and focus, and this is no more evident than in the most recent vintages.

Despite some damage from spring frosts followed by intense summer heat during the 2019 growing season, the fruit at harvest was super-clean and notably ripe without being too ripe. As a result, Céline notes, “the wines are remarkably fresh and terroir-driven, so we are quite happy with the results”.

We’re delighted to announce that the Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard 2019s are now available in stock – this is yet another stellar collection in a long string of exceptional performances. In her pursuit of ever greater elegance, Céline has proven to be adept at embracing the warmth and sunshine of recent vintages, while harnessing vital freshness and energy at the same time. Displaying both focus and finesse, these are wines of texture and aromatics – not only are they a joy to drink now in their youth; they’re also built to evolve beautifully in the cellar.

“A ripe nose offers up attractively fresh aromas of rosemary oil, citrus confit and a mix of white fleshed fruit. There is fine richness to the bigger-bodied, succulent and seductively textured medium weight flavors that are satisfying if not exactly classic. This too should drink well young.” Allen Meadows

“The 2019 Chassagne-Montrachet Maltroye 1er Cru has a fragrant, chalk dust scented bouquet that opens nicely with aeration. The palate is well balanced with a lightly spiced opening, touches of orange rind and marmalade lending a welcome tanginess. It might not be a long-term Chassagne, though it is thoroughly enjoyable.” NM 90

“A pretty and much more floral nose features mostly ripe white orchard fruit and lemon rind scents. The rich, opulent and concentrated medium-bodied flavors possess fine length on the balanced finish that is shaped by citrus-tinged acidity. This too is lovely.” BH 91

“The 2019 Chassagne-Montrachet Vergers 1er Cru has a reserved bouquet at first, opening with light walnut and hazelnut scents that impart a Meursault-like allure. The palate is well balanced with a lively opening, rounded and slightly honeyed in texture, good acidity with a persistent finish. Excellent.” NM 91

Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru “Les Caillerets” 2019
S$ 164 / 750 ML
36 bottles
“The 2019 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Caillerets 1er Cru has a crisp, more understated bouquet with more earthy overtones that the domaine's other cuvées. The palate is one of the most terroir-expressive from the domaine, very well defined with a lightly spiced finish. This has a real spring in its step.” NM 93

Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru “La Romanée” 2019
S$ 211 / 750 ML
8 bottles
“A whiff of the exotic is present on the aromas of white peach, citrus confit and passion fruit. There is excellent punch and detail to the intensely stony medium-bodied flavors that conclude in a bone-dry and impressively long if somewhat lean finale. This is very, very tightly wound and as such I suspect that the finish will eventually flesh out and my rating assumes that this will occur over time.” BH 92

Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2019
S$ 493 / 750 ML
18 bottles
“Like the La Romanée, this too flirts with hints of exotic on the white and yellow fruit, passion fruit and jasmine tea aromas. The caressing and seductively textured bigger-bodied flavors possess good power on the lemony, very dry and impressively lengthy finish. I would add that this too is rather tightly wound, and I would advise holding it for at least 5 years first.” BH 93

Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2019
S$ 493 / 750 ML
18 bottles
“A cooler and very pure nose freely offers up its aromas of spice, various citrus elements and ripe white fleshed fruit, in particular white peach. The delicious, intense and beautifully textured medium weight plus flavors possess focused power and fine detail on the balanced and strikingly long finish. This is a Bâtard of finesse and understated rather than overt muscle and imposing size and weight.” BH 93

ON ALLOCATION
Le Montrachet Grand Cru 2019
S$ 1,089 / 750 ML
6 bottles
“The 2019 Montrachet Grand Cru, of which there is one and a half barrels this year (actually the maximum that the domaine produces), has an intense oyster shell and flinty bouquet, touches of hazelnut and white peach developing with aeration. The palate is well balanced with a very slight reduction on the entry, lively and very concentrated with orange rind and quince towards the finish. The new oak from the half barrel is conspicuous at the moment but that will be integrated with time in bottle.” NM 95
