Every single one
was stunning. They included a Hautes-Côte-de-Nuits —
a freaking Hautes-Côte-de-Nuits! — that
drank like a Grand Cru. We adore these exquisitely
perfumed wines…
— Noble Rot
These, whether white or red, are
exemplary: pure, gently oaky, intense and classy.
— Clive Coates, MW
To produce wines of emotion, it takes
talent, work and a lot of sensitivity. Few are able
to combine these three qualities.

Claire Naudin
is an extraordinary vigneronne — without a
doubt one of our favourite people in Burgundy.
Thoughtful, inquisitive and sensitive, she is a rare
reservoir of wisdom, empathy and genuine warmth.
|
She also happens to make head-turning wines from what
are typically considered “simpler” appellations.
Her domaine, Domaine
Naudin-Ferrand, is nestled into the
picturesque hillside of Magny-lès-Villers, the only
village in the Hautes-Côtes region which straddles the
boundary between the two appellations of Bourgogne
Hautes-Côtes de Beaune and Bourgogne
Hautes-Côtes de Nuits. The estate covers about 22
hectares of vineyards, with prestigious parcels in Aloxe,
Ladoix, Echézeaux, and Nuits-Saint-Georges. Claire has
been running the domaine since 1994, when she took over
from her father Henri Naudin after earning degrees in
Agronomy and Oenology and gaining experience in vineyards
and cellars across the globe.
![Naudin-Ferrand Vineyard work](https://www.artisan-cellars.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/claire_naudin_hand_on_vines_closeup_fb.jpg)
Over the past two decades, Claire has taken progressive
steps to lower yields, improve trellising, eschew
synthetic chemical use and sort ruthlessly in the cellar
when the selective picking in the vineyard is not rigorous
enough for the vintage.
Though her vineyards are cultivated according to organic
principles, they are not certified. Claire is of the
opinion that formal organic accreditation tends to lead to
a certain standardisation of wine, something she actively
wants to avoid. She’s determined to maintain her
independence and freedom to make holistic decisions. As a
matter of fact, her ultimate goal is to add zero
non-natural ingredients to her vineyards, not even sulphur
and copper (both of which are permitted by organic
regulations). This means she has to strive to find other
solutions to combat vineyard threats using other naturally
occurring organic materials. This approach may be more
expensive but, in her view, it is still preferable because
it results in better care of both the vineyard and the
vineyard workers.
Claire’s aesthetic and vision are expressed in no finer
form than the much beloved Flower
Series wines, which are each
named after the characteristic wild flower species that
grow in the respective vineyards. We are especially fond
of them, and find ourselves reaching for them regularly
during our downtime.

The wines are
elegant and pure examples of their type, which I
personally admire.
— Allen Meadows
…the low-sulfur wines take complexity and hedonistic
joy to another level. They are not easy wines as
they, I feel, require reflection to find the full
depths of their delight.
— Steen Öhman
She is a strict non-dogmatist (there’s
a contrast in terms for you) but she certainly has
her way without SO2. In the end, just damned fine
wine.
— Alice Feiring

This remarkable lady is also married to Jean-Yves Bizot of the
cult Domaine Bizot in
Vosne-Romanée. The couple exchange thoughts about
viticulture and winemaking, while applying their
independent decisions at each domaine. Indeed, there are
more similarities between them than differences. After
all, they adopt similar approaches in their work. But make
no mistake, Claire’s wines are her own — uniquely
identifiable to their terroir and her personality — and it
is precisely these qualities that endear them to her fans.
Claire Naudin’s wines embody the new Burgundy. They are
both proudly ancient — downright basic in their
methodology, absolutely minimal in their accoutrement —
and emphatically forward-looking, in that Claire is
especially concerned about the impact of her work on
future generations. Her wines are as much philosophical as
they are visceral to taste. They speak of the beauty of
simplicity, and carry themselves with grace.
To people who are in the know, Claire Naudin is already
a star, and one that they secretly hope others will not
discover too quickly. We can say this without reservation:
her winsome wines speak for themselves. They speak of a
place, and they are articulate, but not pompous. They are
light-footed, gentle and perfumed. And then, just before
you empty your glass, they burst forth to reveal their
roots and strength. These wines are charming, but serious,
much like their creator.
We
absolutely adore Claire
Naudin and her wines. Today, we’re
overjoyed to be able to present to you her exuberant
and highly finessed 2019s, on a pre-arrival basis.
Expect to encounter some of the highest expressions
the domaine has ever reached in this newest vintage
allocation.
|
Claire’s signature style — which marries florality with
delectably pure fruit polished by gentle oak tone — shines
through vividly every vintage. Her wines are fascinating
to experience both in their youth as well as after some
cellaring. With the sheer expressiveness of the 2019
vintage combined with scarcity of supply, neither
hedonists nor collectors will want to miss these.

100% old-vine
Aligoté. The main plot in
Corgoloin’s Le Clou was planted in
1934, and other older plots are
included, with the oldest being
one planted in 1902 in
Magny-lès-Villers. Vinified and
bottled completely without
addition of sulphur. |
“A pale lemon yellow, but more important is
the heavenly bouquet, apples, lemon zest,
evidently significant dry extract, fills the
mouth, adequate acidity, and very
persistent. An Aligoté of impeccable
character.” Jasper
Morris, MW |

Bellis Perennis
Hautes-Côtes de Beaune 2019
|
S$ 82 / 750 ML

100% Chardonnay.
From 2 adjacent parcels south of
Magny-lès-Villers, only 0.65 ha,
manually harvested. Organic.
Average age of vines is ~25 years
old, yield is kept below 40hl/ha
in a generous vintage. No sulphur
added until bottling. |
“Lively, phenolic nose, the skins of the
plums. Though Claire does not crush the
grapes before she presses, she does her best
to ensure significant phenolic expression
during the pressing. I would describe this
low-sulphur Hautes Côtes as characterful
rather than elegant, with some heart to the
fruit and definitely good length.” Jasper Morris, MW

Hautes-Côtes de Nuits 2019

100% Chardonnay.
From Les Villers parcel in the
northern reach of
Magny-lès-Villers; 1.17 ha,
manually harvested. Organic.
Average age of vines is 20 years
old, yield is kept at a very low
30hl/ha. No sulphur added until
bottling.
|
“The Hautes Côtes de Nuits version is
notably more floral than the Hautes Côtes de
Beaune. Pale colour, not just a more floral
nose here, but white fruit too. There is
surprisingly high acidity, too much for
some, a sign of very good tension for
others, and fine persistence.” Jasper Morris, MW

Orchis mascula is
a type of orchid; all of the wines
in Claire’s original low-SO2 range
carry the name of a flower. This
has a wonderful delicate colour
and a lovely floral scent. To
preserve those floral notes from
the whole-bunch pressing, there is
no pumping over and hardly any
punching down during fermentation,
which also explains the light
colour. This is not a powerful
wine on the palate, but the
delicacy of the fruit carries it.
|
“Mid crimson purple. A heavenly bouquet with
a sweetness of fruit to back the floral
notes. Sweet deep raspberry with a drier
finish as the whole bunches reassert
themselves. But give this two years and the
components will harmonise. A long and fine
aftertaste.” Jasper

Myosotis Arvensis
Hautes-Côtes de Nuits 2019
|
S$ 89 / 750 ML for
3-bottles or more
S$ 94 / 750 ML
|
Myosotis arvensis
is the scientific name for the
forget-me-not flower. This is more
structured and ample than the
Orchis. The vines are not that
old, but they have plenty of
presence. The bouquet is a bit
earthier, but still with the
swirling top notes of Pinot. The
palate has something a little
untamed, but also more going on. A
more chalky site than its paired
Orchis wine.
|
“Being bottled even as we were tasting. A
pretty mid purple, less deep than Orchis
Mascula. The nose is not quite as
concentrated either. However the fruit
covers the palate, adding in a little blood
orange, and of the two Hautes Côtes wine
Myosotis has slightly higher acidity.” Jasper Morris, MW

From vines aged
between 50 to 110 years old,
spread across 3 different parcels
to the east of the
Magny-lès-Villers village. Some of
the oldest vines in the domaine’s
holdings and the crown jewel of
the Flower Series wines.
|
“Medium deep pink to crimson, a little more
weight of fruit here on the nose, and
seamless on the palate, where the fruit
fills out the mouth to avoid the angularity
which this appellation can deliver. Very
long clean and pure finish.” Jasper Morris, MW

Damodes” 2019
|
S$ 225 / 750 ML
S$ 496 / 1,500 ML –
Magnum
|
Nuits-Saint-Georges
Les Damodes premier cru comes from
a tiny plot adjacent to the border
with Vosne-Romanée. Claire has a
quarter of a hectare. It is
understated with a charming
perfume; that is, before the
strength of the terroir takes
over. But do not let the ease of
expression of Claire’s wines
deceive you, for this will age and
in fact will require it.
Definitely more Vosne in character
than Nuits.
|
“. . . Deep crimson in colour. The bouquet
suggests concentration without yielding
detail. Some red fruit weight up front,
quite high acid behind and maybe a touch of
volatile. . . . Lovely fruit to finish
though.” JM 91-94

|
“A fine and elegant light purple. The nose
is beautifully expressive, more in roses
than fruit, delicious gorgeous seamless
fruit, pure fresh strawberry with a couple
of cherry notes, smooth more than detailed,
but very fine and properly persistent. The
flowers come back right at the end.” JM
