An exciting month
lies ahead as more and more of the
2018 Burgundies arrive on our shores,
along with new releases from some of
our most beloved grower Champagne
producers.
(We also have a secret stash of
goodies that aren’t in the catalogue yet
— since you’re on our mailing list,
you’ll get a first look later this month
— so keep your eyes peeled.)
Burgundy lovers will be spoilt for
choice as our new arrivals span the
Côte d’Or, from Meursault to Vosne to
Gevrey, then head on up through to
Chablis.
The Côte de Beaune is
admirably represented by the pure,
intense Meursaults of Domaine
Tessier, and the finessed
offerings from rising star Chandon
de Briailles, a historic estate
with extraordinary holdings. It’s no
doubt thanks to their rigour in
biodynamics and natural winemaking
that François and Claude de Nicolay
have turned out wines this vintage
that are lavish and layered, yet
remarkably light on their feet.
From the Côte de Nuits
come the luxuriant, expressive,
high-definition 2018 Pinots from
Vosne-Romanée-based Confuron-Gindre,
now led by the new-generation prodigy
Edouard Confuron. In the same Vosne
neighbourhood, Guillaume Tardy’s
lavish but nuanced red Burgundies from
his family domaine Jean Tardy have
been a Burgundy insiders’ secret, but
we think they won’t be secret for much
longer.
Fans of delicate, seductive
Chambolles and Gevreys will like what
they find from Domaine Robert
Groffier, which continues to
scale ever loftier heights under the
talented Nicolas Groffier. Our friend
and perennial favourite Pascal
Marchand is also back, with a
vintage that is fabulous across the
entirety of his superb portfolio,
which spans both the Côte de Beaune
and the Côte de Nuits. Another
exciting domaine with spectacular
vineyard holdings across both Côtes is
Génot-Boulanger. This
revitalized estate is one to keep your
eye on, and their sensational 2018s
may be their best vintage yet.
Moving a little further north,
Athenaïs de Béru has wowed us time and
again with her elegantly soft yet
shapely Chablis. Our first vintage of
her exquisitely textured Château
de Béru wines sold out very
quickly, so we’re elated that our
shelves will once more be graced with
her wines.
Old
friends from Champagne come in the
form of some superstar collectible
grower domaines. Olivier Collin’s
Champagne Ulysse Collin
is a name that has become a modern
classic, and his expressive
single-vineyard creations never fail
to astound. Georges Laval’s
mind-blowing champagnes are
experiences unto themselves — when you
can find them. Thanks to this latest
shipment, you can find them here now,
but probably not for long. Meanwhile,
the Bérêche brothers are
undeniably at the top of their game.
Vinous, delicate and precise, theirs
are striking champagnes loaded with
personality.
Rounding out the
shipment are the impeccable Rieslings
from middle-Mosel master, Thomas Haag
at Schloss Lieser. 2019 was an
exceptional vintage in the middle
Mosel, and Thomas hit it out of the
park yet again.
