Domaine Jean-Marc
Millot is now most decidedly a darling of
dedicated Burgundy lovers, and Alix Millot has
turned out another pristine set of terroir-driven
pinot noirs. Very small quantities here, so
allocation rules will apply.

Millot wines

Domaine Jean-Marc Millot is a
Burgundian delight… these wines with such a joyful
drinkability deserve a place in most collectors’
cellar.

Burgundy wines come in many different forms and
expressions, but we’ve always preferred the elegant,
non-extracted style, redolent with perfume and
succulent fruits. With pinot noir, tannins should be
a consequence of vintage character and vinification,
and must remain underneath — not overpower — pure
fruit.
|
In this regard, Jean-Marc Millot has always got
his wines “right”. Jean-Marc has been growing grapes and
honing his winemaking skills since the late 1980s. He
started estate bottling in 1992, and in 1997, he and his
wife Christine began taking back control of vineyards
which had been leased out to other producers, resulting in
a substantial acreage increase in the premier and grand
crus in their holdings.
Millot produces a very focused set of wines from his
highly acclaimed terroirs. His vineyards are not only
famous by name, but the actual location of every parcel is
truly special.
For example, the domaine’s Echézeaux is a blend of three
famous climats, creating a sum in the bottle that is
greater than the parts. His Les Suchots vines are
in a highly favourable section, while the Clos de Vougeot
parcel is located in the illustrious Le Grand
Maupertui, quite possibly the finest climat of the
entire clos. Even the Côte de Nuits-Villages are from very
old vines, and one cuvée is from a monopole vineyard, Le
Clos de Faulques, popularly documented as a standout
in this “humble” appellation.
Jean-Marc Millot is a careful and pensive winemaker
obsessed with clarity and precision. Everything he does,
from vineyard to bottle, is in order to make sure that the
terroir shines through in his wines. At harvest
time, the domaine uses small plastic bins to keep the
grapes from crushing each other with their own weight. The
team harvests at night when temperatures are lower in
order to retain freshness and acidity. Once in the winery,
Millot destems everything and does a cold soak followed by
relatively long fermentations. There is no punching down,
so tannins are not extracted from the seeds but gently
transmitted from the skins via daily pump-overs.

Not
surprisingly, Alix Millot at Domaine Jean-Marc
Millot made some splendid wines in 2019.
…we find the vivacious style that is the trademark
of 2019: hedonistic, in the best sense of the word.
— Steen Öhman |
|
Jean-Marc
has effortlessly passed the baton to his dynamic, young
and talented daughter Alix Millot. Alix has worked
full time with her father since 2014. The bond between
father and daughter is visibly strong and the consistently
fabulous quality of recent vintages are a testament to
this wonderful familial partnership. Since vintage 2017,
Alix has been the dominant hand behind the domaine’s
wines. When asked what she does differently compared to
her father, she always insists that she merely faithfully
applies what she has learned from him. In this regard,
Alix’s handiwork is truly a seamless extension of
Jean-Marc’s, as her wines reflect the same spirit and
philosophy which has endeared so many to the Millot style.
Domaine Jean-Marc Millot produces pure, soft, mesmerising
burgundies with an accent firmly on the watchwords for
pinot noir: aroma and fruit. Great care is taken not to
over-extract on the basis that, with the low yields they
get from their old vines, a good density of texture and
flavour will already be present in the grapes. It is Pinot
Noir after all, so what makes each wine different is the
nuances from one vineyard site to the next: the very
essence of Burgundy.
Clive Coates once wrote this about Jean-Marc
Millot in his book: “This is a future
star, I believe.” We believe that this has already
happened. Today, we are thrilled to offer another
outstanding collection from Domaine
Jean-Marc Millot from the miraculous 2019
harvest. Quantities are very limited.

Côte de
Nuits-Villages V. V. 2019
|
S$ 68 + GST / 750 ml
|
This is mostly
from Les Vignottes from the
village of Premeaux, just south of
Clos de L’Arlot, 70+ year-old
vines grown on clay-limestone
soils. |
“…showing vivid, fresh fruit – a bit more
lingonberry giving the wine a slightly firm
note. It is certainly not overripe. Fine and
balanced – a vin de soif – with delightful
freshness and vivacity..” Steen Öhman

|
Côte de
Nuits-Villages “Aux Faulques” 2019
|
S$ 81 + GST / 750 ml
|
A 1.8-ha monopole
in Comblanchien. |
“One of my favorite wines from Millot… The
2019 is deep, intensely spicy, and perfumed,
offering lovely complexity. Alix feels that
her new destemmer has given this wine a
finer, more detailed expression – and this
could well be true. This is a delightful
glass by any standard…” Steen Öhman

Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru “Les Suchots” 2019
|
S$ 242 + GST / 750 ml
|
“The Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots is really
showing well. Its oak is well-integrated,
and the wine is refined, airy, and really
firing on all cylinders. It’s fresh and
lively, and has a fine floral element helped
by Nordic berries illuminating the tension
and freshness. With hedonistic drive and
depth, I do like this Suchots.” WH
93-94
“Clear mid purple, less deep in colour
than the village Vosne but a much more
aromatic style, the fruit is really pretty
on the palate and kicks on at or even
after the finish. Fresh red fruits, really
delicious fine and long.” JM
92-95

Echézeaux Grand Cru 2019
|
S$ 346 + GST / 750 ml
|
A 1.05-ha holding
from parcels in Echézeaux du
Dessus, Poulaillères and Clos St.
Denis. |
“This classic Echezeaux is airy and
lightfooted, and far more forward than the
Echezeaux du Dessus, made from plots in
Poulaillères, Echezeaux du Dessus, and Clos
St. Denis. This is an elegant, floral
Echezeaux. Very refined with its Nordic cool
– cloudberries especially – it is open and
vivid with an almost citrus-like freshness.
A lively, seductive Echezeaux.” WH

Clos de Vougeot “Grand Maupertui” Grand Cru
2019
|
S$ 346 + GST / 750 ml
|
From a 0.38-ha
parcel in Grand Maupertui. |
“Deep, quite dark colour, a little bit of
reduction, which soon disappears, this is a
bright solid muscular Clos Vougeot, with
huge weight, but absolutely as it should be,
firm, structured and promising an excellent
future.” JM 95-97
“The Clos Vougeot is showing the best of
this mighty vineyard. Coming from the top
part of the appellation, it has a fine
mineral touch and a multi-dimensional,
perfumed nose. Seductive, vivid, and very
sensual, this is a tremendous glass of
Vougeot. I adore the Nordic berries. This
is clearly a vin d’émotion.” WH
94-95

|
Grands Echézeaux Grand Cru 2019
|
S$ 693 + GST / 750 ml
|
From a 0.2-ha
parcel immediately below
Poulaillères in Echézeaux. |
“The Grands Echezeaux is quite a step up
from the Echezeaux du Dessus, bowling me
over with a sense of airy greatness from
this superior terroir. It has grandeur and
voluptuousness with a Nordic touch. The
fruit is lively and intense, offering the
almost classic (in 2019) sweet/sour tension
thanks to the cloudberry/lingonberry hint.
Another vin d’émotion.” WH 95-96

Echézeaux du Dessus “Cuvée 1949” Grand Cru
2019
|
S$ 673
+ GST / 750 ml
S$ 1,480 + GST / 1,500 ml – Magnum
|
From the oldest
vines in the Du Dessus climat,
planted in 1949. Less than 900
bottles made. |
“From five rows of Echezeaux du Dessus,
planted in 1949, enough to make a couple of
barrels. Rich deep purple, the bouquet
begins with a heady reduction which very
rapidly cleans up. This is really
significantly more sumptuous than the
regular Echezeaux, with an extraordinary
finish. Though the fruit is a mite darker,
more importantly it is much more
concentrated. I am ambivalent about micro
super-cuvées but this one works, and is
justified, because not too much has been
taken out of the regular bottling.” JM
