Cruse Wine Co.

Crushing it
again — and now with California’s finest sparkling
wines
|
|
|
|
Against a
landscape that often feels dominated by either
top-shelf Cabernet or acidic European emulations,
the Cruse wines aim to reimagine what “table wine”
can be: fruity, quaffable, affordable. And more than
anything, they’re intensely loyal to their
California origins.
— Esther Mobley, San Francisco
Chronicle
Long a fixture of the somms and lovers
of somms among us…
— David Riley, Nob Hill Gazette
Cruse has a knack for coaxing
considerable nuance from what can only be described
as an eccentric combination of grape and vineyard
sites.
— Antonio Galloni
|
|
|
“His wines exist outside of
culture wars, neither alienating nor indulging the
low-alcohol champions or the hedonists,”
writes Esther Mobley in The
Chronicle. |
Michael Cruse may have first risen to fame due to his
über-cult Ultramarine
sparkling wine — now recognised by many as the best
sparkling wine from California — but behind the scenes, in
various projects where he held winemaking
responsibilities, he was already proving his talent beyond
bubblies.
Eventually he could no longer resist the urge to launch
his own project, so in 2013, Michael launched his
eponymous Cruse Wine Co. winery to craft
fruit-driven and satisfying wines that are pleasurable,
affordable, balanced and unabashedly Californian.
That said, Michael knew he didn’t want to create another
Pinot Noir or Cabernet. He did a little vineyard sleuthing
and found inspiration in varieties such as Valdiguié,
Tannat, Muscat, Carignan and Saint Laurent. He started
making a range of single-vineyard still wines from these
grapes, as well as several sparkling wines (pét-nats and
traditional method) that are fresh, vibrant and racy.
Coming from a family that has called California home for
many generations, the roots of the Northern California
Coast run deep within Michael. He pays homage to his
heritage by focusing on sites within Napa, Sonoma,
Mendocino and Contra Costa Counties to create these highly
original wines.
Michael Cruse
|
As a person, Michael Cruse is a sincere, humble,
kind-hearted geeky guy-next-door you want to hang out
with. (The fact that he happens to make delicious wines
you want to drink all the time only makes it easier to do
so.) Little wonder that in a few short years, he has
crafted a stellar reputation as one of the brightest new
beacons coming out of California. And the accolades are
still streaming in.
While California has secured its (well-deserved) fame
with popular international varieties, we have always felt
that these classical archetypes are more reserved than the
exuberant voice of Cruse’s wines when it comes to
expressing the quintessential California culture which
prizes individuality, freedom, creativity and a
neverending quest for progress.
At Cruse Wine Co., Michael makes highly aromatic whites
and vibrant juicy reds that articulate their varieties and
sites without pretense. They hark back to the original
California wine, authentic and resplendent with the golden
state’s sun-drenched fruit, but charged with an
unrestrained vivacity rarely found in mainstream examples.
Michael doesn’t believe in over-engineering things in the
winery. He follows very basic processes in his winemaking,
with no additives other than a smidgen of sulphur to
protect the wine in transit. The goal is make honest wines
which are just really good wines: expressive, lip-smacking
and relatively affordable. In his own words, these wines
are “Mom-approved”.

As always,
Michael Cruse presents a set of highly original
wines that really stand apart for their originality.

Michael Cruse, the enfant terrible of
West Coast viticulture after winning Winemaker
of the Year in 2016, has now turned his sights
to champagne and lesser known grapes as he rounds
the corner into a respectably long career.

We greet the news of every new release from Cruse with
great anticipation, and this is not simply because our
Cruse shelf has usually been empty for months prior.
Having had the privilege of representing Cruse Wine Co.
since its debut vintage, we’ve witnessed how Michael’s
wines have grown through the years in terms of finesse and
clarity of expression, all without sacrificing their
greatest virtue: instant likeability.
This new collection is especially exciting because it
reintroduces a wine genre that showcases Michael’s most
special talent: making traditional method (or méthode
champenoise) sparkling wines.
Taste the Tradition
or Blanc de Noirs
blind and it’s almost impossible to feel that we are not
in Champagne. This is not to heap blind praise on
Champagne’s sparklers at the neglect of others; rather, it
shows how much more room for growth there is in the
quality of California sparkling winemaking. It also
highlights that with these new releases, Michael
single-handedly has shown that it is possible to make
California sparkling wine that can rival the best grower
Champagnes. To put it another way, with these sparkling
wines, Michael has just brought the Ultramarine experience
to the rest of us — though it’s worth bearing in mind that
the production is still rather tiny.
|
I had the
idea of taking grower Champagne techniques and
applying them to California […] I became
obsessive about that process and making the most
terroir-driven, traditional sparkling wines in
California…
— Michael Cruse

We couldn’t be more excited to share
this latest collection of wines from Cruse Wine Co. How good
are they? In a word: brilliant. From his perennial
signature Valdiguié, to the dangerously
delectable Monkey Jacket, the exoticism of a
dry Muscat and Tannat, to the
downright winning sparkling wines, there is, dare we
say, a Cruse for everyone today.

Rorick Vineyard
Muscat 2019
|
S$ 64
/ 750 ml
|
From a unique site
high in the Sierra Foothills just
outside the town of Murphys. The
vines come from a block of Muscat
planted in the mid-90s, on rocky
schist soils. The grapes were
hand-harvested and gently pressed
without skin contact. Juice was
transferred to a small stainless
steel tank for fermentation, then
racked to neutral barrels to finish
malolactic fermentation. A small
amount of sulphur was applied just
prior to bottling. Only 146 cases
produced. 13% alc.
|
[Winemaker’s
notes:] “The nose is
intensely aromatic. Floral notes of jasmine,
magnolia, and honeysuckle dominate, with the
fruity character of lychee and tangerine
playing a supporting role. The palate is
waxy and tannic with an incredible weight
indicative of the elevation and
concentration. Banana and pineapple continue
to a mineral finish. A serious and
pleasurable Muscat.”

The 2018 still
red wines are quite attractive and very much capture
the mid-weight feel and freshness that are such
signatures of the vintage.

Monkey
Jacket Red Blend
2018
|
S$ 60 / 750 ml for 3
bottles or more
S$ 64 / 750 ml
|
51% Valdiguié, 13%
Carignan, 10% Syrah, 8% Pinot Noir
and other mixed reds from carefully
selected vineyards located in
Mendocino, Napa, Sonoma, and Suisun
counties. Approximately 20% of the
blend was fermented whole cluster.
All of the grapes were fermented in
concrete and then pressed into older
French oak barrels, a few puncheons,
concrete tanks, and a small amount
of stainless steel. Malolactic
occurred naturally with the wine
receiving a light sulphur addition
immediately before bottling. 12.5%
alc.
|
“Palish ruby red. Lifted aromatics of sweet
red berries and crushed flower petals
promises a bright, juicy, highly drinkable
wine. On the palate it enters with
unexpected focus of flavour, with a dominant
sappy red fruit profile, undergirded by
minor accents of cool earth, stones,
blueberry and smoky herb. Finishes with a
broad but really refined set of tannins and
vibrant acidity, leaving an impression of
juiciness but also complexity as the wine
exits with understated mineral tones and
savouriness that invite the next sip.” AC
“The 2018 Monkey Jacket is aromatic,
light on its feet and refreshing, all of
which make it an absolute joy to drink
now. Perfumed floral notes and sweet
crushed red berry fruit add to a feeling
of freshness. In 2018, yields were a bit
higher for the Valdiguié, so it is more
prominent in the blend than in years
past.” Antonio

Alder Springs
Tannat 2018
|
S$ 78
/ 750 ml
|
From the impeccably
farmed Alder Springs vineyard in
Laytonville, Mendocino County,
planted at an elevation of 2,300 ft
on a steep, southern slope of
decomposed sandstone. The
combination of elevation and
distance from the coast creates a
cool climate while still having
enough hang time to fully ripen the
Tannat grapes. Fruit was destemmed
into a concrete vat; fermentation
occurred spontaneously after a few
days and the grapes were then
punched down and pumped over for 12
days. Élevage in used barriques then
racked once prior to bottling.
Neither fined nor filtered; no
additives with the exception of a
minimal amount of sulphur.
|
[Winemaker’s
notes:] “This wine
displays an unconventional mixture of cedar
and tobacco with violets and cherries on the
nose. Bright fruit meets round tannins while
the wine finishes savoury and clean.”
“The 2018 Tannat Alder Springs shows all
of the earthy, savory qualities that are
typical of the variety, but in a vibrant,
mid-weight style that avoids the rustic
qualities often found in the grape. Dark
cherry, leather, sage menthol and
underbrush are laced together in this
super-distinctive red from Michael Cruse.”

Rancho Chimiles
Valdiguié 2019
|
S$ 80
/ 750 ml
|
100% Valdiguié (also
known as Napa Gamay) from Terry
Wilson’s Rancho Chimiles vineyard in
Wooden Valley, a cooler region in
south Napa Valley, nestled against
the Vacas mountains. Vines are 40+
years old. Fruit was destemmed into
an open concrete tank. Fermentation
occurred spontaneously with manual
punchdowns. After 12 days on skins,
the wine was lightly pressed and
moved to older 500-litre puncheons.
Malolactic occurred naturally with
the wine receiving a light sulphur
addition immediately before
bottling. 484 cases produced. 13%
alc.
|
[Winemaker’s
notes:] “The nose is
pretty rose and brambly raspberry. Fresh,
clean dirt and juicy radish greens. The wine
has a delicious flow and is a pleasure to
have at the table.”
“This is Cruse’s signature red wine and
one that is constantly and uniquely
expressive. The 2019 version is no
different. Crunchy wild red fruits and
rose hip predominate on the nose. Fresh,
sweet and textured raspberry fruit on the
palate, complicated with a touch of earth
and cracked pepper. There is an earnest
and deeper feel to the wine this time
around, yet it remains a frank and
lovable, delicious red. This is a wine
that in many ways delivers Michael Cruse’s
promise to bring an original taste of
California to the table for everyone to
enjoy. Serious fun!” AC

Tradition
NV
|
S$ 96 / 750 ml for 3
bottles or more
S$ 101 / 750 ml
|
From the 2017 base
vintage with 6% perpetual cuvée
added from previous vintages. Nearly
equal parts Pinot Noir and
Chardonnay from Alder Springs,
Keefer Ranch, Rorick Vineyard, and
Heintz Vineyard. The grapes were
pressed using a traditional
Champagne cycle and press cut.
Native primary and malolactic
fermentation in barrel, wooden
tanks, and about 20% stainless steel
fermentation. No sulphur was used in
the élevage. The wine was racked
once and tirage bottled in June
without fining or filtering. After
approximately two years under
tirage, the wine was riddled and
hand-disgorged with zero dosage and
no added sulphur. 12.5% alc.
|
“Stones, orange blossom, talcum powder,
white peach, soaring and broad on the nose.
Enters with a decisive bite, juicy and
penetrating with its melange of citrus
fruit, grapefuit and mandarin, spiked with a
persistent lift of minerals. Delectably long
and caressing, finishing with a repeating
marzipan and almond note on the inner mouth.
The foundational wine is so good, driving
constant change in the glass, shifting from
floral fruitiness to millefeuille stacks of
minerals that eventually merge together in a
seamless savoury-tinted finish. This goes
down way too easily. We wanted to reach out
for another bottle but there were no more at
hand (at that time). A winning sparkling to
get by the case.”
AC
“The NV (2017) Tradition offers a
striking interplay of textural richness
and breadth buffered by vibrant acids that
add freshness. Tangerine oil, almond,
dried flowers and mint impart a strong
savoury character, but what stands out
most about the 2017 is sheer vinous
intensity. Readers will find a rich,
beautifully textured sparkling wine that
truly comes alive at the dinner table. Not
to mention that the Cruse Tradition is one
of the most compelling sparkling wines
being made in California. I suggest
opening the 2017 a few hours in advance,
as air does wonders for the wine.” AG

“The 2017 Tradition Sparkling Wine is
made from 54% Pinot Noir and 46%
Chardonnay. It's made using the
traditional method and is intentionally
crafted to be a bit more oxidative and
open than the Ultramarine sparklings. The
nose explodes to gregarious aromas of
chalk, freshly baked brioche and crushed
almonds with a lush core of peachy fruits
and honeyed nuances. The palate is all
class, with those ripe fruits reigned in
by chalky undertones and framed by fine,
featherweight mousse, and it finishes long
and toasty.” WA 93

Blanc de
Noirs 2017
|
S$ 139
/ 750 ml
|
Pinot Noir from Alder
Springs, a high-elevation site in
the northern part of Mendocino
county. Fruit is pressed whole
cluster using a traditional
Champagne cycle. Only the first
press is used. The wine is fermented
in puncheon and when finished is
topped up. The barrels are then left
untouched for nearly a year of
elevage, without addition of SO2 or
topping up. The wine is then tirage
bottled and left on lees for over 24
months. It is then disgorged and
bottled without dosage of any kind.
|
“What was intended as a study of the effects
of oxidative and reductive styles of
winemaking here has turned out as a beatific
union. A very fine and penetrating nose,
with chalky apples and crushed berries,
initially shows the oxidative side, with
faint elements of grilled nuts. The wine
enters elegant, soft, focused but highly
energised, with a laser beam of a finish
which shows the reductive side: a touch of
truffles and flintiness. The mouthfeel is
luxurious — silky, slender and feathery —
quite unexpected for a blanc de noirs, much
less from a sunnier climate such as this.
Finishing dry but never harsh, with
repeating notes of salinity and captivating
perfume of almond and pistachio. This shall
evolve beautifully. So, cellar with
confidence and with every expectation for
eventual greatness.”
