. . the
magnificent vineyards of Vosne-Romanée are, in their
entirety, the greatest of the Côte d’Or. Of
extraordinary body and richness, meltingly tender,
with an extreme finesse and extraordinarily scented,
they combine all possible desirable qualities.
— Camille Rodier (1937)

Vosne-Romanée. The
name alone conjures up impressions of grandeur,
opulence, and prestige. To Burgundy collectors, it
has long been known as The Pearl of the Côte,
the most prized commune in the whole of the Côte
d’Or. At present, it is also likely to be the most
expensive.
|
Many of the most celebrated Burgundy producers today hail
from this special village. Others may not be based here but
are fortunate to be able to produce wines from this glorious
terroir. Such wines have inspired unceasing admiration (and
sometimes even obsession) in wine lovers the world over.
What makes Vosne wines so attractive? The interplay between
geographical and geological factors is certainly conducive.
The commune's geographical location is nearly faultless: the
vineyards are exposed due east, enabling the vines to
receive the gentle warming of the morning sun, crucial for
even ripening of the grapes. Meanwhile, its soils are a
favourable mixture of limestone and marl. Together, all of
these elements seem to conspire to produce perfect fruits.
Ultimately, though, it is the wines themselves that are the
most compelling and eloquent ambassadors of Vosne-Romanée.
It is in Gevrey-Chambertin that we find richness and power,
in Chambolle-Musigny finesse and delicacy, and
Morey-Saint-Denis understatement and consistency. Yet in
Vosne-Romanée, we find all of these qualities entwined
seamlessly in one exquisitely refined package. It is for
many the archetype of a complete Burgundy, a wine that lacks
no virtue and suffers no obvious shortcomings.
For
over 30 years, Pascal Marchand
has been one of the most admired vignerons in Burgundy. This
is all the more remarkable given that this generous man is
originally from Quebec. Pascal was responsible for the
revival of Domaine Comte Armand in the 1990s and the
reinvigoration of Domaine de la Vougeraie in the early
2000s, but it is with his personal project Marchand-Tawse
(started in 2007) that we now get to experience his best
work yet. His touch is impeccably light yet full of flair as
his eloquent Vosne-Romanée bottling so ably demonstrates.
Edouard
Confuron from Domaine
Confuron-Gindre in Vosne-Romanée is a young vigneron
to watch. Gifted with a sensitive touch, Edouard crafts
exquisitely generous wines from his family holdings in
Vosne-Romanée, Flagey-Echezeaux and Nuits-Saint-Georges. As
a true Vosne native, Edouard instinctively knows what
defines the commune’s most special attributes. Indeed his
Vosne-Romanée is a textbook model of the village’s exquisite
elegance coupled with understated opulence. It speaks
volumes about Edouard’s prodigious talent as a winemaker
too.
Pierre Duroché
is a poster child of Gevrey-Chambertin's renaissance. Since
taking over the family domaine, he has very quickly become
one of the commune's most renowned names, turning out
elegant, succulent and highly perfumed Gevreys from a region
not usually known for such attributes. Pierre was able to
acquire Vosne-Romanée fruits from his father-in-law, the
famous Jacques Cacheux, and the masterful flair he has
demonstrated with his uncommonly luxuriant Gevreys has also
produced here a perfumed, elegant and just downright
charming Vosne.
Today we bring the hallowed
Vosne-Romanée region closer to you with a special
pack that showcases the craftsmanship of these three
super-talented vignerons. These limited 3-bottle
packs are offered with a special price and
complimentary delivery. Explore the various facets
of the commune’s noble expressions and discover why
this glorious terroir has won over so many ardent
wine lovers.

opulent bouquet of dark cherry, red plum and

complex for a Village Cru, partly because of
the 60- to 70-year-old vines, and the finish
is sensual and quite poised. This is definitely worth
seeking out, as it punches above its
weight.” Neil Martin
