Every single one
was stunning. They included a Hautes-Côte-de-Nuits —
a freaking Hautes-Côte-de-Nuits! — that drank like a
Grand Cru. We adore these exquisitely perfumed wines
. .
— Noble Rot
These, whether white or red, are
exemplary: pure, gently oaky, intense and classy.

To produce wines of emotion, it takes
talent, work and a lot of sensitivity. Few are able
to combine these three qualities.

Claire Naudin
is an incredible vigneronne — without a
doubt one of our favourite people in Burgundy.
Intelligent, inquisitive and sensitive, she is a
rare reservoir of wisdom, empathy and genuine
warmth. She also happens to make head-turning wines
from what are typically considered “simpler”
appellations. |
This remarkable lady is also married to Jean-Yves Bizot of the cult
Domaine Bizot in
Vosne-Romanée. The couple exchange thoughts about
viticulture and winemaking, while applying their independent
decisions at each domaine. Indeed, there are more
similarities between them than differences. After all, they
adopt similar approaches in their work. But make no mistake,
Claire’s wines are her own — uniquely identifiable to their
terroir and her personality — and it is precisely these
qualities that make them endearing to her followers.
Her domaine, Domaine
Naudin-Ferrand, is nestled into the
picturesque hillside of Magny-lès-Villers, the only village
in the Hautes-Côtes region which straddles the boundary
between the two appellations of Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes
de Beaune and Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits.
The estate covers about 22 hectares of vineyards, with
prestigious parcels in Aloxe, Ladoix, Echézeaux, and
Nuits-Saint-Georges. Claire has been running the domaine
since 1994, when she took over from her father Henri Naudin
after earning degrees in Agronomy and Oenology and gaining
experience in vineyards and cellars across the globe.
Unsurprisingly, her vineyards are cultivated according to
organic principles. Over the past two decades, Claire has
taken progressive steps to lower yields, improve trellising,
eschew synthetic chemical use and sort ruthlessly in the
cellar when the selective picking in the vineyard is not
rigorous enough for the vintage.
That said, Claire is of the opinion that formal organic
accreditation can lead to a certain standardisation of wine,
something she actively wants to avoid. She is determined to
maintain her independence and freedom to express the love
for her craft. As a matter of fact, her ultimate goal is to
add zero non-natural ingredients to her vineyards, not even
sulphur and copper (both of which are permitted by organic
laws). This means she has to strive to find other solutions
to combat vineyard threats using other naturally occurring
organic materials. This approach may be more expensive but
in her view it is still preferable because it results in
better care of both the vineyard and the vineyard workers.
Claire’s aesthetic and vision are expressed in no finer form
than the much beloved Flower
Series wines, which are each
named after the characteristic wild flower species that grow
in the respective vineyards. We are especially fond of them,
and find ourselves reaching for them regularly during our
downtime. They satiate our Burgundy cravings and challenge
our perspective of what is beautiful and true.

For readers who
may not be familiar with the wines of this domaine,
they are an excellent source of inexpensive, well
made Burgundy. The wines are elegant and pure
examples of their type, which I personally admire.
— Allen Meadows
. . the low-sulfur wines take complexity and
hedonistic joy to another level. They are not easy
wines as they, I feel, require reflection to find
the full depths of their delight.
— Steen Öhman
She is a strict non-dogmatist (there’s
a contrast in terms for you) but she certainly has
her way without SO2. In the end, just damned fine
wine.

The wines of Claire Naudin embody the new Burgundy. They are
both proudly ancient — downright basic in their methodology,
absolutely minimal in their accoutrement — and emphatically
forward-looking, in that Claire is especially concerned
about the impact of her work on future generations. Her
wines are as much philosophical as they are visceral to
taste. They speak of the beauty of simplicity, and carry
themselves with grace; they convince you by appealing to
your gut instinct.
To people who are in-the-know, Claire Naudin is already a
star, and one that they secretly hope others will not
discover too quickly. We can say this without reservation:
her winsome wines speak for themselves. They speak of a
place, and they are articulate, but not pompous. They are
light-footed, gentle and perfumed. And then, just before you
empty your glass, they leap up to reveal their roots and
strength. These wines are charming, but serious, much like
their creator.
It is no secret that we adore Claire Naudin and her
wines. And so it is with great pleasure and
excitement that we present to you today her lavishly
elegant 2018s. As usual, this new collection is
bound to astound.
|
Vintage after vintage, her signature style — which marries
florality with delectably pure fruit polished by gentle oak
tone — shines through. The vivacity and richness of the 2018
vintage will be especially fascinating to experience both in
the wines’ youth as well as with some cellaring; hedonists
and collectors can take equal interest.
For those who want to get hold of Naudin-Ferrand’s gems more
immediately, don’t overlook Claire’s deliciously inviting
2017 wines which are also listed in the offer below. These

100% old-vines
Aligoté. The main plot in
Corgoloin’s Le Clou was planted in
1934, and other older plots are
included, with the oldest being
one planted in 1902 in
Magny-lès-Villers. Vinified and
bottled completely without
addition of sulphur. |
“. . this is a treat. It’s rich, forward,
and intense, with some passion fruit and
slightly perfumed floral notes. It has a
lovely saline note . . powerful and
intense.” Steen
Öhman
“Brilliant pale
green and yellow, she says has thrown some
oil. Absolutely brilliant now, more floral
than some but with the tangy quality, yet
more flesh. A wine that needs three to four
years. Some grenadine in with the ripe fresh
pear and melon. Unmissable for Aligoté geeks
and pretty good for us normal people too.”

Bellis Perennis
Hautes-Côtes de Beaune 2018

S$ 76 / 750 ML
|
100% Chardonnay.
From 2 adjacent parcels south of
Magny-lès-Villers, only 0.65 ha,
manually harvested. Organic.
Average age of vines is ~25 years
old, yield is kept below 40hl/ha
in a generous vintage. No sulphur
added until bottling. |
“Pure clear colour with a lemon tint. There
is more lime blossom on the nose. This is
fabulous with a sensational elegance, and
that same lime tingle. Really persistent.”
Jasper
Morris, MW
“From Magny-lès-Villers, and raised in 30%
new oak, this is an intense and forward wine
with a nice salty balance and very fine
acidity. An oak impression suggests that
this wine will need a few years to
integrate. I really like its saline tone,
however, as well as its lovely, energetic
tension.” Steen

100% Chardonnay.
From Les Villers parcel in the

Magny-lès-Villers, 1.17 ha,
manually harvested. Organic.
Average age of vines is 20 years
old, yield is kept at a very low
30hl/ha. No sulphur added until
bottling.

“Lemon and lime in colour, with a fatter
nose, one third new wood. This shows in a
minor way on the nose at this early stage,
not in the mouth where the citrus notes
dominate. This may head in the same
(terrific) direction as Bellis and just be
more backward.” Jasper Morris, MW
“There is a delightful saline note, and a
beautiful roundness with exotic fruits like
peach and pineapple. The oak and mineral
background give nice structure and
freshness. For medium-term drinking.” Steen Öhman

Orchis mascula is
a type of orchid; all of the wines
in Claire’s original low-SO2 range
carry the name of a flower. This
has a wonderful delicate colour
and a lovely floral scent. To
preserve those floral notes from
the whole-bunch pressing, there is
no pumping over and hardly any
punching down during fermentation,
which also explains the light
colour. This is not a powerful
wine on the palate, but the
delicacy of the fruit carries it.
|
“Lively purple, more extraction and less
ethereal than in some vintages, sweet deep
raspberry fruit with that lovely whole bunch
tingle at the back and excellent
concentration.” Jasper Morris, MW
“Now we are talking! What a refined,
perfumed nose; red cherries and rose petals.
Slightly hot, but well balanced and
releasing delicate, perfumed scent.” Steen Öhman

Myosotis Arvensis
Hautes-Côtes de Nuits 2018
|
S$ 76 / 750 ML for
3-bottles or more
S$ 80 / 750 ML
|
Myosotis arvensis
is the scientific name for the
forget-me-not flower. This is more
structured and ample than the
Orchis. The vines are not that
old, but they have plenty of
presence. The bouquet is a bit
earthier, but still with the
swirling top notes of Pinot. The
palate has something a little
untamed, but also more going on. A
more chalky site than its paired
Orchis wine.
|
“This is a more serious wine, somewhat on
the warmer side, but still vivid and fresh.
In the bouquet, cherries with a hint of
coriander and boysenberries. On the palate,
good intensity and depth, with very nice
mid-palate fruit.” Steen
Öhman

From vines aged
between 50 to 110 years old,
spread across 3 different parcels
to the east of the
Magny-lès-Villers village. Some of
the oldest vines in the domaine’s
holdings and the crown jewel of
the Flower Series wines.
|
“There is a common hedonistic value to the
sensual quality of the Viola Odorata and a
maturing wine from Bizot. But in the case of
Naudin, one can both find it and afford it!
[. . ] But give them time and the Viola
Odorata will blossom, with poetic, maturing
notes and complexity worthy of a top
Chambolle village.” Steen
Öhman
“Dense purple but lively. The bouquet is
absolutely sensational, dark raspberry with
such vibrancy. There is a fresh core here
despite evident ripe fruit. Needs more time
but it is going to be really exciting.” Jasper Morris, MW

Nuits-Saint-Georges
Les Damodes premier cru comes from
a tiny plot adjacent to the border
with Vosne-Romanée. Claire has a
quarter of a hectare. It is
understated with a charming
perfume; that is, before the
strength of the terroir takes
over. But do not let the ease of
expression of Claire’s wines
deceive you, for this will age and
in fact will require it.
Definitely more Vosne in character
than Nuits.
|
“Clear pure purple with a fresh nose, lively
dark raspberry fruit, lifted. There is a
touch more wood than usual, perhaps from the
wooden fermenting vat. Vigorous crunchy
fruit at the back, well integrated tannins,
enough acidity, juicy long and fine.” JM

From Les Rouges du
Bas section of this grand cru.
Raised in approximately 60% new
oak.
|
“Classic full purple, the nose is a bit
mixed, lovely deep raspberry with a touch of
acidity, then the whole bunch crunch.
Backward but huge intensity of fruit and
potential. Needs a lot more elevage but this
is really promising.” JM
93-96
“Whole-cluster vinification combines with
vivid energy for the vintage. The wine is
rich – even sensual – and beautifully
perfumed with hints of peony, rose, cinnamon
and allspice. Around 60% new oak provides
quite a backbone to support the 2018
generosity. A delightful wine in this rather
rich vintage.” WH 93-95 |

Hautes-Côtes de Nuits blanc
“Clematis Vitalba” 2017 |

Hautes-Côtes de Beaune blanc
“Bellis Perennis” 2017 |

Hautes-Côtes de Beaune
“Orchis Mascula” 2017 |
S$ 70 / 750 ml
|
“No
destemming, no sulphur, just gorgeous
succulent pinot which vibrates in the glass.
I was on something of an adrenalin high on

of Claire Naudin’s winemaking.” Jasper
Morris

Hautes-Côtes de Beaune
“Myosotis Arvensis” 2017 |
S$ 80 / 750 ml

“The colour
here is even lighter, the nose just as
floral though not denser, and the underlying
notes are mire of raspberry. Good graceful
finish.” Jasper Morris
|
|
Echézeaux Grand Cru 2017 |
S$ 422 / 750 ml
|
“Rich full
purple. The nose has a svelte succulence to
it, joyous wine, is it the fruit or are the
flowers in control? Not really relevant.
Spice and pepper from the whole bunch.
Enough weight of fruit, good acid balance,
there will be detail to show later and there
is certainly persistence.” JM
