This is the best time in a
generation to drink California wine. More
than that, today marks the arrival of a mature wine
culture, where producers are confident enough not to
mimic the Old World, or obscure the nuances of
terroir with “clever” cellar work, but rather seek
greatness in a uniquely American context.

Jon Bonné
This movement is a
welcome correction of the sins of the past, and it
is turning California into a great wine destination,
once again . .

There is a new wave of California
winemakers overthrowing the reign of ‘big flavour’
with authenticity, elegance and nuance, releasing
thrilling terroir-driven wines with freshness and
finesse — wines that speak absolutely of their roots
and purely reflect a California sense of place. Of
all of these producers, three estates stand out from
their peers.

Many consider Arnot-Roberts to be the
poster child of the New California Wine movement. With his
childhood friend Duncan Arnot Meyers, Nathan Lee Roberts
(pictured) created the eponymous winery with the aim
of crafting graceful, nimble and highly articulate goût
de terroir wines. The wines are indeed restrained and
elegant, with a beautiful textural quality and lovely
balance. Antonio Galloni has declared: “As someone who has the privilege to
taste the benchmark wines of Italy, France and
California, there is no doubt in my mind Arnot-Roberts
is one of the world’s great wineries.” Their
limited-release wines are perennial sommelier darlings not
least because they are the shining prototype of California’s
bright future.
The notoriously remote,
sprawling Hirsch Vineyards
ranch is a biodynamic nirvana every self-respecting wine
grower wishes they could inhabit. As a farmer, David
Hirsch’s genius is legendary, having produced fruits that
helped luminaries such as William-Selyem, Kistler and
Littorai attain fame with their “Hirsch
Vineyards”-designated pinots. His daughter Jasmine
Hirsch (pictured) joined him in 2008 as the
family was increasing its focus on producing estate-bottled
wines, and together they have continued to refine their
philosophies on farming and terroir expression. Acclaim for
their delicate, intricate cool-climate pinot noirs continues
to escalate year after year. Be prepared to encounter, as
Hugh Johnson so astutely summarised, “Pinot
flavour at its most electrically alive”.
There is
no one artisan who better captures the ethos and complete
gamut of what it takes to express California’s true voice
than Ted Lemon (pictured) of Littorai. Ted is a true
believer in the potential of California terroir and to him,
the path to terroir is through complete dedication to
sustainable farming — he has long been a passionate and
vocal advocate of biodynamics. Littorai is the ‘OG’ of The
New California, and Ted Lemon has been, and is, one of the
most influential winemakers and mentors in the California
wine industry today. (An additional feather in Lemon’s cap
is that he was the first American to run a Burgundy estate,
Domaine Guy Roulot in Meursault in the early 1980s, after
having apprenticed with Dujac, Roumier, de Villaine, and
Bruno Clair.) Swooned over by ardent fans around the globe,
Ted’s elegant, wonderfully nuanced wines are some of the
most singular and age-worthy treasures from the true Sonoma
Coast. They are indeed “the
pinnacle of Burgundian finesse in New World soil”
(Craig LaBan, The Philadelphia
Inquirer).
We are privileged to be working with
these visionaries at such an important moment in
wine history, and are overjoyed that they will all
be joining our conversation on the evening of Friday 19 June 2020 live on
Zoom. And of course
it’s not just all talk, we’ll be sipping their
signature wines as we chat too!
