These days, the terms “star” and “superstar” tend to be
bandied about liberally, and especially so when it comes to
young winemakers from famous Burgundy communes like
Vosne-Romanée.
But one of the few such winemakers on whom this status is
conferred with unanimous agreement is Charles Lachaux
of Domaine Arnoux-Lachaux. His rise to fame has been
meteoric and can be attributed as much to his lofty
ambitions as to his incredible attention to fundamental
details. The progress that Domaine Arnoux-Lachaux has
achieved in the few short years since Charles was put in
charge has been nothing short of remarkable, as the quality
of the wines produced unequivocally demonstrates.
Previously known as Domaine Robert Arnoux, the domaine was
renamed in 2007 to Domaine Arnoux-Lachaux to reflect
the fact that by then the wines had been made by Pascal
Lachaux for over two decades and that he and his wife
Florence Arnoux (daughter of Robert Arnoux) had been running
the domaine since 1995. Their eldest son, Charles Lachaux,
returned to join the domaine in 2011 after completing his
oenology studies and acquiring work experience at wineries
around the world, and in 2012 took over the reins from his
father. Since then, Charles has made many important changes
in both viticulture and vinification.
Charles Lachaux is only turning 31
this year but he has had the rare privilege of being
under the tutelage of the grand dame of Burgundy,
Lalou Bize-Leroy. The impact of this special
training was instantly noticeable starting with
vintage 2017, when Charles finally felt he had full
freedom in realising his vision for his wines.
|
Like his legendary mentor Madame Leroy, Charles believes
that 90% of quality comes from intense, uncompromising work
in the vineyard. Maintaining vibrant microbial life in the
soils is a top priority. This translates to foregoing
chemical fertilisers, herbicides and fungicides while
exploring alternative means to strengthen the vines; Lachaux
utilises organic and biodynamic techniques.
The domaine’s approach to pruning and canopy
management has evolved importantly since Charles took over.
“By pruning late and tall, we try to push what the vineyard
can do itself in producing quality fruit and resisting odium
and mildew,” he notes. “The approach allows more leaves for
photosynthesis, and then the vines are more focused on the
grapes and root system for greater results.” As a result,
harvest tends to take place around 7-10 days earlier than
under the previous conventional method. According to
Charles, respecting the vigour of the vine also produces
smaller berries with thicker skins, which require only light
tannin extraction in the cellar.
In the cellar, Charles has spearheaded a big change by
fermenting with significant percentages of whole Pinot Noir
bunches, stems and all, included. This approach renders
wines with bright, pure, transparent fruit and finesse
instead of heavy concentration and high alcohol.
“For me it creates more seductive wines that suit my taste.
It’s the style I prefer,” he says. “With whole bunches you
have to be careful to avoid greenness and harsh tannins in
the wines. You must be more intuitive in the winemaking,”
Charles notes. “But it creates the opportunity for more
emotional wines. That’s why I like it as well.”
Charles now uses new oak barrels more judiciously during élevage
— the grands crus see an average of 30% new oak, premiers
crus 15-20% and villages wines 10-12% — in an effort to
highlight transparent fruit and each climat’s distinct
personality in the context of each distinct vintage.
|
. . this
is an immensely promising domaine, with one of the
brightest futures ahead of any in Burgundy, and
Lachaux has vindicated my confidence by producing
some of the very finest wines of the 2018 vintage.
— William Kelley
His 2018 wines are another clear step towards the
very top echelon of Burgundy and Vosne-Romanée. They
are airy, energetic, and vivid, with tremendous joie
de vivre . .
— Steen Öhman
Lachaux should be happy with the
results as I found them to be among the best wines
of the vintage when considered from top to bottom.
— Allen Meadows

|
Today, the domaine’s wines are vastly improved in terms of
elegance, purity and pleasurability. While this is no
coincidence with Charles Lachaux at the helm, this humble
young man is quick to attribute success to a family team
effort with his father, Pascal, and mother, Florence, who to
this day are still active in assisting him in running the
domaine.
Wine critics and Burgundy cognoscenti have been quick to
notice — and applaud — these airy, energetic and supremely
expressive wines. If 2017 marked the turning point for the
domaine, the 2018 vintage brings an even greater sense of
achievement and poise to the collection. As accomplished as
these acclaimed Burgundies already are, you can expect even
greater things to come.
We are
pleased to offer a parcel of DOMAINE
ARNOUX-LACHAUX’s gems from Charles Lachaux’s
magnificent vintage 2018. Starting with this
vintage, the domaine has introduced a refreshed
visual identity with newly designed labels that
are simple, elegant and striking; these were
created by Charles’ wife, artist Louise
Lachaux-Voarick.

Bourgogne
“Pinot Fin” 2018

S$
65 + GST / 750 ml for 3-bottles or
more
S$ 69 + GST / 750 ml
|
“Aromas of plums and
wild berries mingle with hints of
raw cocoa and spices, introducing
the 2018 Bourgogne Pinot Fin, a
medium to full-bodied, charming and
enveloping wine, its fleshy core of
fruit framed by powdery, melting
tannins.” William Kelley,
The Wine Advocate
“This special selection of
Pinot Noir, a blend of seven
parcels, makes wonderfully elegant
wine despite its modest appellation.
It's not deeply coloured and has
delicate cranberry aromas. It's
silky and graceful, textured but not
weighty, and has adequate
concentration. It shows lift and
charm [ . . ] a delicate finish with
light tannins. Quite long.” Stephen
Brook, Decanter

Chambolle-Musigny
2018
|
S$
135 + GST / 750 ml for 3-bottles or
more
S$ 143 + GST / 750 ml
|
“Higher elevation and
an exposition tilted northwards
gives a cooler edge to this wine.
Very perfumed, it has poised
raspberry aromas and perfect
Chambolle typicity. Yet it's denser
than expected, compact rather than
robust or overtly tannic [ . . ] But
it's persistent and stylish.” 91
points, Decanter
“The 2018
Chambolle-Musigny Village has a very
harmonious, slightly earthy bouquet,
the 100% whole bunch lending a very
discreet tertiary/sous-bois quality.
The palate is medium-bodied with
crunchy red fruit (cranberry,
strawberry and pomegranate). This
has quite strict tannins and a
Morey-inspired, sapid finish. Good
potential.” NM 90-92 |

Vosne-Romanée
2018
|
S$ 150 + GST / 750 ml
|
“This comes from half a hectare
of vines marching up the slope from the road
to the village. It may not be the most
prized sector of Vosne, but the domaine has
made a lovely wine. The red-fruited nose is
sweet and intense with delectable purity of
fruit and precision. On the palate it's
richer, juicier, with upfront fruit, good
concentration, and firm tannins. There's
spice and vigour and complexity, adding up
to a long, textured Vosne that's finely
balanced.” 92 points, Decanter

Vosne-Romanée
“Les Hautes Maizières” 2018
|
S$
180 + GST / 750 ml
|
“Just down the slope
from Les Suchots, this small
vineyard can produce very good wine,
as is the case here. The red-fruited
nose is fresh and zesty, and shows
poise and a light leafy character.
There's solid fruit here, quite rich
and concentrated, with firm but ripe
tannins. It displays plenty of drive
as well as volume. Long juicy
finish.” 92 points,
Decanter
“One of the best village
terroirs is Vosne-Romanée Maizieres
Hautes, and Arnoux-Lachaux has a
nice plot in the Flagey-Echezeaux
part of this vineyard. This is a
delightful glass, and in the long
run better than the generic Vosne.
The bouquet offers layers of deep
red and dark fruit delightfully
perfumed with hints of peony and
notes of raspberries, cherries, soy
and redcurrant. It is airy and
effortless.” WH 91-92

Nuits-Saint-Georges
1er Cru “Les Procès” 2018
|
S$
185 + GST / 750 ml
|
“No hail here,
fortunately. Attractive garnet
colour, almost ‘Le vin vermeil’ of
earlier times. Discreet nose, alpine
strawberry and a little sturdy
smokiness, with some underlying
raspberry notes, and very good
length with just an agreeable trace
of acidity underlying. A touch of
fresh liquorice and another
outstandingly long finish.” JM
92-94 (Jasper
Morris MW)
“The domaine owns about half of this
small premier cru close to the town.
Unlike Les Poisets, it was spared
hail damage in this vintage. The
nose is packed with zesty red fruits
and shows clarity and precision.
It's concentrated yet delightfully
fresh. There's ample grip and weight
of fruit, good spiciness, and a
compact structure. Assertive without
being aggressive, it has sufficient
acidity to give a long stylish
finish.” 92 points,
Decanter

Vosne-Romanée
1er Cru “Les Chaumes” 2018
|
S$
250 + GST / 750 ml

“Sublime rich deep
purple, this is quite glorious too,
with such a sensational density of
sublimely detailed red berry fruit.
Balancing on the point of maximum
ripeness, these raspberries are
dropping with lusciousness. A
ravishing hedonistic follow through
seduces the palate without losing
poise. Very fine and exceptionally
persistent.” JM 93-97

Clos de
Vougeot “Quartier de Marei Haut” Grand Cru
2018

S$ 450 + GST / 750 ml

“From the Quartier de Marais
Haut. Fresh glowing mid purple. A very
elegant bouquet for Clos Vougeot. Excellent
weight of fruit through the middle,
absolutely covers the tannins, the light
touch has worked even in this vineyard.
Exceptionally long finish.” JM 94-97

Échézeaux “Les
Rouges” Grand Cru 2018
|
S$
550 + GST / 750 ml
|
“The 2018 Echezeaux
Grand Cru is also showing extremely
well, soaring from the glass with
aromas of raspberries, cherries,
blood orange, incense, spices and
peonies. On the palate it's medium
to full-bodied, deep and ample, with
a strikingly vibrant, dynamic core
of fruit that's structured around
fine, powdery tannins, concluding
with a long and expansive finish. To
produce such an energetic Echezeaux
in such a warm vintage is quite an
achievement.” WA 95
“The Echezeaux 2018 – from the
terroir Rouges du Bas – is an
elegant and delightfully floral
wine. The nose offers red and dark
berry fruit, and is delightfully
spiced with violets, Asian spices
and cinnamon. On the palate, fine
vivid fruit, mineral-driven with
some delightful saline notes. A
beautifully airy and perfumed
Echezeaux. This is a sexy wine.” WH

Vosne-Romanée
1er Cru “Les Grands Suchots” 2018
|
S$ 630 + GST / 750 ml
|
“Note the name: It refers to
the Arnoux-Lachaux section at the top of the
vineyard where there is no dip, and is a
usage that has been sanctioned on evidence
that it was in use in previous times.
Noticeably denser purple, really expressive
on the nose too where the dark fruit has not
stopped the sense of freshness of the fruit.
Tremendous concentration and a real sense of
style without the characteristic dip. Such
strength of flavour, the noblest of
raspberries, right through to the extended
crisp finish with little touches of white
pepper. As good as it gets! Still tasting it
several minutes later.” JM 95-99

Latricières-Chambertin
Grand Cru 2018
|
S$
630 + GST / 750 ml
|
“Aromas of sweet wild
berries, plums and peonies mingle
with hints of coniferous forest
floor, burning embers and spices in
a complex bouquet, introducing
Lachaux's 2018
Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru.
It's a full-bodied, concentrated and
racy wine that's deep and
multidimensional, with a layered
core of fruit built around a bright
spine of acidity and framed by rich,
powdery tannins. Long and
penetrating, this is a magical
Latricières that numbers among the
high points of the domaine's 2018
portfolio.” WA 96
“Dense rich purple, wonderful
concentrated fruit with a little bit
of spice. Wonderful weight through
the middle, then a bit gentler
behind, with a lovely long sweet
dark fruit finish. Very little
production after 2017 hail damage,
as they pruned the affected wood
very severely: just 4.5 barrels for
half a hectare.” JM 95-98

Romanée-Saint-Vivant
Grand Cru 2018
|
S$ 1,450 + GST / 750 ml

“Sublime rich deep purple, this
is quite glorious too, with such a
sensational density of sublimely detailed
red berry fruit. Balancing on the point of
maximum ripeness, these raspberries are
dropping with lusciousness. A ravishing
hedonistic follow through seduces the palate
without losing poise. Very fine and
exceptionally persistent.” JM 96-100
“One of the wines of the vintage on the
Côte de Nuits is the 2018
Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru, a magical
wine that offers up a kaleidoscopic bouquet
of rose petals, blood orange, musk, smoked
tea, wild berries and plums. Full-bodied,
concentrated and serenely balanced, its
satiny attack segues into a deep and
voluminous mid-palate that's framed by an
ample chassis of suave structuring tannins
that are entirely concealed in a fleshy core
of pungently sapid fruit. Long and
expansive, Lachaux produced three and a half
barrels of this stunning
Romanée-Saint-Vivant.” WA 97

Vosne-Romanée
1er Cru “Aux Reignots” 2018
|
S$ 1,580 + GST / 750 ml
|
“2 barrels made of which one is
new. Dense rich purple. Strict fresh deep
raspberry, more linear than their Suchots
but exceptionally intense, with a very light
smoky touch. What a wealth of fruit! And the
length…. Sensational.” JM 95-99
“The Vosne-Romanée Aux Reignots 2018 is
the wine in the Arnoux-Lachaux portfolio
that started the conversion – hence also the
wine that shows the most progress. This is a
truly gorgeous wine – coming from a plot in
the bottom of Aux Reignots just above La
Romanée. Charles Lachaux has produced an
airy, organic and lively Reignots that
rivals the best from this vineyard. The
bouquet offers fresh and airy red notes –
redcurrant, pomegranate, and raspberries
spiced with cinnamon, violets and peony. On
the palate, silky, rich and hedonistic with
delightful acidity for the vintage. An
emotional wine … ohh yes.” WH 95-96
