most favourite wines. So thrilled to present

We are still catching our breath from
last night’s IG Live session with Tomoko Kuriyama of Chanterêves. In a short
span of time, this producer has risen rapidly from
underdog to darling status, and the story behind
this beautiful partnership has captured the
imagination of people seeking out that ethereal
Burgundy experience.
|
Tomoko is originally from Japan but was trained as an
oenologist at the famous wine university in Geisenheim,
Germany. She then worked as estate manager at a notable
Rheingau estate, Weingut Friedrich Altenkirch, making wines
from varietals such as Riesling, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris,
Gewürtztraminer and Sauvignon Blanc, before moving to
Burgundy to further her ambitions.
Her husband Guillaume started his career as an assistant to
Gerard Boudot of Domaine Etienne Sauzet in
Puligny-Montrachet. He still works as the cellar master of
the famous Domaine Simon Bize in Savigny-les-Beaune to this
day.
Shortly after the turn of the millenium, Burgundy began to
see a rise in micro-négoce operations and within a
short period of time has witnessed an increase not just in
number but also in quality. This business model provides
ambitious independent vignerons with a chance to produce top
quality wines, without having to acquire vineyards, which
are either too rarely available, or too expensive acquire,
or both.
This is not to say that setting up a négoce
operation is a small undertaking. In a community like this,
it requires much more than financial means. Talent,
experience and connections are key to securing the best
vineyard sources. These are exactly the assets that Tomoko
and Guillaume happen to possess, and so in 2010 they decided
to start their own micro-négoce venture, which they
named Chanterêves.
This charming couple has a shared vision. They don’t seek to
make big extractive wines, preferring instead to craft
refined, aromatic, energetic wines that gently build in the
mouth and tantalise the senses. Their wines are more about
finesse and subtlety than immediate impact. They have a
lovely vitality and sense of harmony; saline whites and
fresh, pure-fruited reds.
Chanterêves burst onto the scene with great success in their
debut vintage, with Jancis Robinson declaring their humble Bourgogne Pinot Noir
her wine of the week during the primeur week back
then. Since then, things have only gone from strength to
strength.
|
(the
wines) have a delightful, I am tempted to suggest
Japanese, delicacy about them.
— Jancis Robinson, MW
The wines are extremely pure, with an
almost naked impression of the fruit. They are
focused, transparent and crystal clear palate wise.
They seem completely free from vinification makeup .
.
— Steen Öhman
Its wines, whites and reds, are
gorgeously transparent, fresh and unadorned. They
are excellent values.
— Eric Asimov, The New York Times

Tomoko and Guillaume undertake an artisanal approach with
minimal intervention to create wines that reflect their
origins, imbued with a personal spirit of elegance. All
Chanterêves wines are naturally fermented with indigenous
yeasts, with the grape clusters all intact (no destemming)
and no oenological products employed other than a smidgen of
sulphur. New oak is used sparingly.
There is a special fascination among epicureans for all
things Japanese and, as wine lovers, we tend to imagine a
special connection between the elegant wines of Burgundy and
the Japanese ethos of detailed minimalism. At Chanterêves,
the intersection of the two cultures has yielded a
combination that distills the best qualities of each. Fans
adore them and if you observe what they say, they almost
always gush with affection for these wines. Tomoko and
Guillaume make Burgundy wines with an unassuming sincerity
that is palpable in each bottle and their followers connect
with that.
We are thrilled to announce that
the beautiful vintage 2018 Burgundies of CHANTERÊVES are preparing
to depart the domaine in a few weeks’ time, to make
their way to our shores. In Tomoko’s own words, 2018
yielded a full set of charming “fruit-forward”
wines; she is thrilled that the wines have retained
plenty of freshness which will keep drinkers happily
returning to their glass.

Vintage 2018 marks the first “domaine” wine from
Chanterêves: a super old-vine Bourgogne Aligoté from
Les Chagniots. While the wine was first released in
the 2017 vintage, it was only with the 2018 vintage that
Tomoko and Guillaume claimed full control of the vines,
having completed the purchase of the vineyard. As the notes
suggest, it is an impressive wine of towering achievement
well beyond what its humbler appellation might suggest.
A new wine has also joined our Chanterêves offering this
year: a village red Pernand-Vergelesses
(special tip: keep an eye on this commune; there is a
serious revival going on down there) from a lovely plot in Les
Boutières. Additionally, Tomoko and Guillaume have
succeeded in regaining some quality Meursault village,
so this cuvée has now returned. (Faithful followers will
have noticed that this wine stopped appearing after vintage
2013.)
We have noticed over the years that these pretty wines do
not stay long on our list. Ordering them now prior to
arrival may be the surest way to guarantee that you will lay
your hands on these gentle, perfumed burgundies.

Bourgogne
Chardonnay 2018
|
S$ 50 / 750 ml for
3-bottles or more
S$ 53 / 750 ml
|
“Perfumed
and aromatic, the 2018 Bourgogne
Blanc bursts with scents of orange blossom,
pear, white flowers and honeyed peaches. Medium to full-bodied,
it's ample and fleshy but pure and
succulent. A third of the blend
comes from the Beaujolais, the balance from
Maranges, and one might easily imagine that
there are some muscaté selections of
Chardonnay at play here, even though I'm
assured that isn't the case.” William

Bourgogne
Aligoté “Les Chagniots” 2018
|
S$ 58 / 750 ml
|
From Chanterêves’ own
100-year-old vines
“The 2018 Bourgogne Aligoté is the first
vintage from the
first vineyard purchase for Chanterêves,
located between Ladoix and Corgolin. The
vines here are 100 years old, which meant
that 25% had to be replanted. This has a
delightful bouquet of honeysuckle and
jasmine notes, very focused and intense. The
balanced palate delivers a fine bead of
acidity. Full of
tension and vigor, with touches of
rosewater and strawberry toward the vivid
finish. This is a peach of an Aligoté, and
it comes highly recommended. Excellent.”

“The 2018 Auxey-Duresses Les
Hautés offers up inviting aromas of citrus
oil, pear and freshly baked bread, followed
by a medium to full-bodied, ample and
layered palate that's textural
but chalky, structured around ripe but
racy acids and abundant dry extract. This
has turned out beautifully.” WA

white peach and linden introduce the 2018
Saint-Romain Combe Bazin, a medium to
full-bodied, textural
wine with an almost unctuously fleshy
attack that segues into a fresh, chalky
and beautifully site-typical mid-palate
and finish.” William Kelley

The reds
are done in an airy, minimalist style that favors
freshness and aromatic nuance.
— Antonio Galloni
The 2018 vintage has naturally resulted
in quite a muscular set of reds by the standards of
a house defined by elegance, but the reds retain all
the enchanting Chanterêves fragrance . .

“Unfurling
in the glass with aromas of ripe cherries,
plums and raspberries that are
complemented by sweet soil tones,
the 2018 Bourgogne Rouge is medium to
full-bodied, its fleshy core of fruit
structured around a chassis of rich, powdery
tannin that lends the wine quite a muscular
profile this year. This is a blend of
roughly equal parts fruit from the granitic
soils of Paris l'Hôpital, in the
Hautes-Côtes near Maranges, and
Puligny-Montrachet.” WA 89
