These, whether
white or red, are exemplary: pure, gently oaky,
intense and classy.
— Clive Coates, MW
Every single one was stunning. They
included a Hautes-Côte-de-Nuits — a freaking
Hautes-Côte-de-Nuits! — that drank like a
Grand Cru. We adore these exquisitely perfumed wines
. .
— Noble Rot
Don’t be put off by the simple
Hautes-Côtes appellation, these are fascinating
wines.
— Jasper Morris, MW
For readers who may not be familiar
with the wines of this domaine, they are an
excellent source of inexpensive, well made Burgundy.
The wines are elegant and pure examples of their
type, which I personally admire.

Domaine
Naudin-Ferrand is nestled on the
picturesque hillside of Magny-lès-Villers, the only
village in the Hautes-Côtes region which straddles
the boundary between the two appellations of
Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Beaune and Bourgogne
Hautes-Côtes de Nuits.
|
The domaine covers about 22 hectares of vineyards, with
prestigious parcels in Aloxe, Ladoix, Echézeaux, and
Nuits-Saint-Georges. Claire Naudin has been running
the domaine since 1994, when she took over from her father
Henri Naudin after earning degrees in Agronomy and Oenology
and gaining experience in vineyards and cellars across the
globe.
Claire is an incredible vigneronne, intelligent,
inquisitive and sensitive, a rare reservoir of wisdom,
empathy and genuine warmth. She also happens to make
head-turning wines from what are typically considered
“simpler” appellations. Over the past two decades, she has
taken progressive steps to lower yields, improve trellising,
eschew synthetic chemical use and sort ruthlessly in the
cellar when the selective picking in the vineyard is not
rigorous enough for the vintage.
This remarkable lady is married to Jean-Yves
Bizot of the cult Domaine
Bizot in Vosne-Romanée. Thomas Berry, who is
Jean-Yves’ right-hand man at Domaine Bizot and a family
friend, observes that the progress Claire is making at her
domaine is nothing short of exceptional. There is in fact
more of a Bizot-Naudin think-tank partnership that shapes
her current wines than the couple will ever publicly admit.
They exchange thoughts about viticulture and winemaking,
while applying their independent decisions at each domaine.
Unsurprisingly, like Domaine Bizot, Domaine Naudin-Ferrand’s
vineyards are cultivated according to organic methodologies.
Claire is of the opinion that organic accreditation can lead
to a certain standardisation of wine, something she actively
wants to avoid. She is determined to maintain her
independence and freedom to express the love for her craft.
Her wines are often compared to Bizot’s wines. Indeed, there
are more similarities between them than differences. After
all, they adopt similar approaches in their work. But make
no mistake, Claire’s wines are her own, uniquely
identifiable to their terroir and her personality, and it is
precisely these qualities that make them endearing to her
followers.

To produce wines
of emotion, it takes talent, work and a lot of
sensitivity. Few are able to combine these three
qualities.
— Guillaume Laroche, “Entre
Les Vignes”
. . Claire Naudin has been making
beautifully perfumed, floral wines since she took
over her father’s small estate in 1994.

Claire’s aesthetic and vision are expressed in no finer form
than the much beloved Flower Series wines. (Her Flower
Series wines are named after the characteristic wild flower
species that grow in the respective vineyards.) Here, within
our closest circles, we are especially fond of them. We
voluntarily drink them in our own time, often almost
automatically. They satiate our Burgundy cravings and
challenge our perspective of what is beautiful and true.
The wines of Claire Naudin embody the new Burgundy. They are
both proudly ancient — downright basic in their methodology,
absolutely minimal in their accoutrement — and emphatically
forward-looking, in that Claire is especially concerned
about the impact of her work on future generations. Her
wines are as much philosophical as they are visceral to
taste. They speak of the beauty of simplicity, carry their
anti-brand ethos with grace, and convince you by appealing
to your gut instinct.
To people who are in-the-know, Claire Naudin is already a
star, and one that they hope others will not discover too
quickly. We have represented Naudin’s wines for five years
now and we can say this without reservation: her winsome
wines speak for themselves. There is something in each wine
she makes that make people say, “Yes, this wine is
right. This is how I want my wine to be.” They are
light-footed, gentle and perfumed. They speak of a place.
They are articulate, but not pompous. They go down easily
(too easily, perhaps). And then, just before you empty your
glass, they leap up and reveal their roots and strength.
These wines are charming, but serious, much like their
creator. And when you’ve learned all that Claire does (or,
rather, does not do) to make these elegant beauties, it all
makes perfect sense.
It is no secret that Claire Naudin is one of our
favourite vigneronnes in Burgundy, or indeed
anywhere for that matter. And so it is with great
excitement that we offer her extremely charming
2017s today. The wines marry her floral signature
with a depth of fruit that few producers managed to
attain in this otherwise vivacious vintage. |
That being said, these are wines that will age gracefully —
and you’ll be thankful if you choose to wait — that is, if
you’re able to keep your hands off them! Merely two to three
years of rest in the bottle could allow these wines to
achieve a rarefied equilibrium, one where their intoxicating
perfume integrates with finessed sapidity and yet promises
there is more to come.
The wines are all available in stock. The offer is valid
thru 13 March 2020. Orders will be processed subject to
availability and final written confirmation. Full payment is
required no later than 7 days after confirmation invoice is
sent in order to confirm the purchase. No reservation is

“All chardonnay, the vines
being located above Pernand,
with 20cm of red soil on top
of limestone slabs. In tank,
having only just finished
fermenting. Fresh pale
yellow, with succulent plump
apple and peach notes.
Excellent weight of fruit on

notes, complex and
interesting.” Jasper

“From a particular spot with
white marl and sand. There

Galanthus
Nivalis
Vin de France 2017 |
S$
74 / 750 ML
|
100% Pinot
Blanc. Starting with
vintage 2016, Claire
introduced a new member of
the Flower Series, a white
Pinot Blanc-based wine
called Galanthus Nivalis.
Even in its first vintage,
this Vin de
France-classified wine
showed extraordinary poise
and perfume with a savoury
flavour and honeyed
texture. We look forward
to the return of the
Galanthus in the 2017
vintage, which is
particularly
highly-heralded for white
Burgundies. |
“This comes from a 1969 planting of
chardonnay and pinot Gouges. In 2016
the chardonnay froze so the wine was
just pinot blanc and thus Vin de
France rather than appellation.
Claire liked the wine and has
continued it in 2017. Biscuity notes
on the nose, some greengage behind,
the thicker oily texture I know from
tasting with Alice & Olivier de
Moor.” Jasper Morris, MW

Orchis
Mascula
Hautes-Côtes de Beaune 2017
|
S$ 67 / 750 ML
for 3-bottles or more
S$ 70 / 750 ML
|
Orchis
mascula is a type
of orchid; all of
the wines in
Claire’s original
low-SO2 range
carry the name of
a flower. This has
a wonderful
delicate colour
and a lovely
floral scent. To
preserve those
floral notes from
the whole-bunch
pressing, there is
no pumping over
and hardly any
punching down
during
fermentation,
which also
explains the light
colour. This is
not a powerful
wine on the
palate, but the
delicacy of the
fruit carries it.
|
“Palish colour with lighter
rim. This nose is absolutely
gorgeous, there is a heart
of exuberant ripe cherries
but smothered in floral
notes, a little bit of
briary whole-bunch
character, then a sweet pure
violet and rose finish. Just
a little freshness at the
back, no especial density
but a great pleasure in its
style. “I am mad about
this wine,” says
Claire. So am I.” Jasper
Morris, MW

Orchis
Mascula
Hautes-Côtes de Beaune 2016 |
S$ 74 / 750 ML
|
“Vibrant
perfume showing pure cherry
fruits, dashes of pepper and
briar the only switch up in
scents. Medium weight, a
light-pleasing grainy
character to tannins, swish
of dark cherry, malt, green
pepper and nice chew to
close. Good drag of flavour,
intensity, charisma, a real
charismatic mouthful of
pinot noir.” 93

Producing her best wines using
whole bunches and minimal sulphur, Claire’s
beguiling ‘Myosotis Arvensis’ punches well
above its basic Hautes-Côtes de Nuits
designation.

Arvensis
Hautes-Côtes de Nuits 2017 |
S$ 76 / 750 ML

S$ 80 / 750 ML
|
Myosotis
arvensis is the
scientific name
for the
forget-me-not
flower. This is
more structured
and ample than the
Orchis. The vines
are not that old,
but they have
plenty of
presence. The
bouquet is a bit
earthier, but
still with the
swirling top notes
of Pinot. The
palate has
something a little
untamed, but also
more going on. A
more chalky site
than its paired
Orchis wine.
|
“Tasted the day before
bottling . . The colour here
is even lighter, the nose
just as floral though not
denser, and the underlying
notes are mire of raspberry.
Good graceful finish.” Jasper
Morris, MW

Arvensis
Hautes-Côtes de Nuits 2016 |
S$ 85 / 750 ML

“Brooding
perfume shows dark cherry,
cranberry lift, green herbs
and faint earthiness. The
palate is lively, cool in
crisp red cherry fruit
flavours, licked at with
light malty-sweet spice and
finishes long and lightly
chewy. There’s good sense of
‘textural pinot’ here, and
the general vibe is of high
quality and a gentle,
charismatic expression of
Burgundy.” 93

in good balance. About one
third new wood is used
here.” Jasper

Nuits-Saint-Georges
1er
Cru “Les Damodes”
2017 |
S$ 184 / 750 ML
|
Nuits-Saint-Georges
Les Damodes
premier cru comes
from a tiny plot
adjacent to the
border with
Vosne-Romanée.
Claire has a
quarter of a
hectare. It is
understated with a
charming perfume;
that is, before
the strength of
the terroir takes
over. But do not
let the ease of
expression of
Claire’s wines
deceive you, for
this will age and
in fact will
require it.
Definitely more
Vosne in character
than Nuits.
|
“Huge dense purple colour,
with some reduction on the
nose, as if to reinforce its
Nuits masculinity. Perhaps a
touch of volatility. Good
weight of dark fruit and
very good length . .” Jasper
Morris, MW

Echézeaux Grand Cru
2017 |
S$ 422 / 750 ML
|
From
Les Rouges du Bas
section of this
grand cru. Raised
in approximately
70% new oak.
|
“Plenty of freshness and
high tones in what is
otherwise a narrow but quite
deep nose. Ooh, lovely in
the mouth – volume,
concentration, even a touch
of salinty in the impressive
complexity- not many of
these show that. I think
excellent!” Bill Nanson,
Burgundy Report
“Rich full purple. The
nose has a svelte succulence
to it, joyous wine, is it
the fruit or are the flowers
in control? Not really
relevant. Spice and pepper
from the whole bunch. Enough
weight of fruit, good acid
balance, there will be
detail to show later and
there is certainly
persistence.” JM
