Coquard-Loison-Fleurot

Thomas Colladot of Coquard-Loison-Fleurot

Coquard Loison
Fleurot is your new favorite domaine [ . . ] I had to maintain
my Lady Gaga-approved poker face in order to
disguise the thrill [ . . ]
If you have not discovered Coquard Loison Fleurot,
practice saying that name on a daily basis, or use
the acronym “CLF.”
— Neil Martin
If I should mention a future star in Burgundy I
would mention Domaine Coquard-Loison-Fleurot as they
have both the talent and a quite unique collection
of vineyards
— Steen Öhman, WineHog |
|
|
We are certain that their somewhat
complicated name will not be able to hide Domaine
Coquard-Loison-Fleurot from the fame that is fast
coming their way. |
Three years ago, we heard the name whispered in underground
Burgundy circles. After tasting the wines ourselves, we were
immediately convinced that their underground status would
not last very long.
One look at the domaine’s vineyard holdings and it’s hard
not to be impressed. The list is like a who’s-who of Côte de
Nuits all-stars: eleven appellations capped by six grands
crus (Charmes-Chambertin, Clos de Vougeot, Clos de la
Roche, Clos St. Denis, Echezeaux and Grands Echezeaux.)
What's more, these holdings all belong to the domaine: no
négoce activities, no rented vineyards. It is still a
mystery how Coquard-Loison-Fleurot has managed to fly under
Burgundy aficionados’ radar for so long.
Claire Fleurot and Thomas Colladot (vigneron)
|
‘CLF’, as their
fans often call them, isn’t exactly a new domaine.
Traditionally their focus was on the domestic French market.
But with the arrival of a new generation — the dynamic Claire
Fleurot managing the domaine’s commercial activities
tag-teamed by the gifted Thomas Colladot (both
pictured above) looking after viticulture and vinification —
the domaine started looking out to the outside world.
Thomas Colladot is known to many as a close friend of
Sébastien Cathiard. In fact, quite a number of his importers
came to know about Thomas and CLF by way of personal
introduction from Sébastien. The two share a nearly
identical philosophy with regards to viticulture and
vinification — lutte raisonée (non-interventionist
unless threatened by disastrous diseases), rigorous
organic-leaning work and a smart and measured use of new
oak. In short: a sensitive contemporary approach to
showcasing terroir, focusing on making wine in the vineyard
rather than intervening unduly in the cellar. Thomas worked
for a while at Domaine Cathiard before returning to
Coquard-Loison-Fleurot. Till this day the two friends are
often seen to discuss their work and taste together.
|
Stylistically,
I was thinking of Mugneret-Gibourg or his nearby
neighbour Emmanuel Rouget, wines brimming full of
crystalline red fruit and tension with satin
textures and spine-tingling tension.
— Neil Martin
. . the style
is lighter than Cathiard, and perhaps more towards
Domaine Georges Noëllat and Domaine Comte
Liger-Belair fruit wise.
— Steen Öhman, WineHog |
|
As good as the wine already is, every new vintage seems to
better the one before. The theme, however, remains the same:
gorgeous purity, lifted aromatics, succulent bright fruits
brimming with details and persistence. It is Colladot’s
sensitivity and deft skills which are improving.
Thomas is rapidly supercharging the domaine to superstardom.
Burgundy critics and writers are thrilled, unanimously
citing Coquard-Loison-Fleurot as one of their most important
recent “discoveries”. Lofty accolades from Neil Martin,
Jasper Morris and Steen Öhman have been documented to attest
to this.
But let’s forget the dizzying scores for a moment
because the truth is that Thomas Colladot has
delivered a superlative, career-besting portfolio
this vintage. We are beyond thrilled to offer our
allocation of Domaine Coquard-Loison-Fleurot’s
extraordinary 2018s. These are wines well worth
checking out across the entire range, so don’t be
the last to jump on them as quantities are quite
limited. |
The offer is valid until 28 February 2020. Orders will be
processed subject to availability and final written
confirmation. Due to restrictive supplies, please understand
that we may have to allocate a number of the wines in order
to ensure as equitable a distribution as possible. To be
considered for items specially marked as “on allocation”
wines, sufficient and balanced requests of other
unrestricted wines must accompany the order. We always
favour balanced requests across the entire range.
If you are new to this domaine, you may wish to check out
their wondrously stylish and perfumed 2017s which will soon
be available ex-stock pending Singapore Customs' final

“Bright juicy fruit,
with touch of tannin behind, dense
and delicious, juicy and long. I
never spotted the higher alcohol
level in this wine.” Jasper

“The 2018 Bourgogne
Rouge has a perfumed bouquet of
black currant and raspberry aromas,
all very pure and well defined. The
palate is medium-bodied with fine
tannins, plenty of black fruit and a
precise finish. This is very fine
for a generic red Burgundy.” Neil

Morey-Saint-Denis
2018 |
S$

“From three lieux-dits
including Clos Solon in the
middle and north of the village.
Another very ebullient 2018 from
Coquard-Loison-Fleurot. Red fruit,
especially raspberry, with saline
notes, a little tighter in structure
than the Chambolle, this shows
excellent promise.” JM 90-93

Gevrey-Chambertin

“The 2018
Gevrey-Chambertin Village has a
perfumed, quite floral bouquet of
dark cherries, raspberry and light
tobacco aromas that gently unfold in
the glass. The palate is very smooth
and harmonious, with lightly spiced
red fruit. Gains weight and grip
toward the very finely detailed
finish, which nudges Premier Cru in
quality. Yeah . . that good.” NM

“The vines are in Les
Gamaires which abuts Morey.
There is incredibly beautiful pure
ripe fruit, essence of raspberry.
Though this shows itself to be a
powerful wine it is balanced below
14% alcohol. Firm tannins behind and
bounding energy.” JM 90-93

Vosne-Romanée

“From Quartiers de
Nuits and Maizières,
top locations, and 70 year old
vines, then blended with a cuvée
from 50 year old vines in Les
Violettes. The blend offers a
super-saturated purple colour, the
nose shows a real nobility, the
quintessence of Vosne, with
beautiful flesh on the palate,
beautifully balanced, just the right
acidity.” JM 92-94 ** 5-star

“From more than 70 year
old vines. More black than purple.
Dense, backward fruit, on the cusp
of black and red, saturates the
palate, thick texture, firm but ripe
tannins, good persistence, not
without finesse.” JM 93-96

“From one third of a
hectare in Les Mazoyères,
planted in 1968 by Thomas
Collardot’s grandfather. Glowing
purple. The nose is majestic but not
over the top. Lovely perfumed ripe
raspberry. Gorgeous flowing fruit
across the palate, fine balance at
the back.” JM 94-97

“They are fortunate to
have more than a hectare in all,
spread between Poulaillères,
Treux and En Orveaux.
Huge density of purple colour. Very
smooth and silky on the nose.
Sensual. There is a nice little bit
of tension behind with a welcome
touch of natural acidity.” JM

Clos de la
Roche Grand Cru 2018 |
S$
310 + GST / 750 ML
|
“There are vines in Chabiots
dating back to 1933 and 1954, and
slightly younger vines in Mochamps.
More red fruit than black with good
tension. Medium plus bodied with
very good length, all flows very
nicely. Still some blue fruit, the
alcohol level makes it less dry than
usual, indeed silkier.” JM 94-97

“The domaine has
sizeable holdings, mostly just across the
main road from grand cru Clos de Vougeot.
The 2017 has a beautiful pink purple colour
and a lovely elegant perfumed bright fruit,
then it shows soft and stylish fruit in the
mouth with just enough acidity. Very good length. Smiling
all the way! A great introduction for
this exciting domaine.” JM

Morey-Saint-Denis 2017
|
S$ 93 + GST / 750 ml
|
“From three lieux-dits
in the middle and north of the village.
Notably denser purple colour compared to the
Chambolle, and displaying a stricter, firmer
nose. Sweet ripe cherries, lovely acidity,
medium plus concentration and fine
aftertaste. More muscle here and a sublime depth of rich
dark cherry fruit.” JM 90-92
|
|
Gevrey-Chambertin 2017 |
S$ 93 + GST / 750 ml
|
“From Champerrier,
Songe, Vignes Belles. The
cuvée used to be on the firmer side when it
was only Vignes Belles but they bought the
other vineyards in 2011 from the local
restaurant, Chez Simon. This starts quietly
then builds beautifully, very elegant but
with a firm structure. Lovely intensity to this,
very persistent.” JM 90-92
|
|
Chambolle-Musigny 2017 |
S$ 98 + GST / 750 ml
|
“The vines are in Les
Gamaires which abuts Morey. One of the
reasons why Thomas uses a few whole bunches
here (the only wine in the cellar) is to
make sure the wine shows a clear difference
in character from his Morey. The wine has a
pretty pink purple colour with an angelic floral nose,
and a crunchy energy to the palate. Very
elegant perfumed finish . .” JM
89-92 |
|
Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2017
|
S$ 250 + GST / 750 ml
|
“The Clos de Vougeot is
classic and very competent – fine intensity and balance.
The plots are in the bottom part of Clos de
Vougeot, but nevertheless displaying lovely
balance and focus. For the Grand Crus 50–60%
new oak – so stylewise more prominent. The
oak is well absorbed – but will take some
time to integrate fully. In my view the dose
of oak is perfectly balanced.” WH 93-94
“From more than 70-year-old vines. Dense bright purple with a
richly fruited vivacious nose
belying its location at the foot of the
slope. This is the first wine in the cellar
with notable tannins but they do not stop
the fruit coming back afterwards.” JM
92-95
