open-quote Olivier Collin’s 2018 disgorgements are outrageously beautiful and compelling.

. . one of the finest single-grower French Champagnes I’ve yet come across from a producer with an extremely limited production . . This is what great, truly individual wine can be. What a lesson!
— Matt Kramer

One of the newest stars in the Champagne firmament is Olivier Collin, in the village of Congy in the Sézannais, south of the Côte des Blancs . . Although a relative newcomer, Collin has emerged as the foremost champion of the Coteaux du Petit Morin, making ripe, richly expressive single-vineyard champagnes from several sites in the region.

This is a Champagne grower to watch.

Champagne Ulysse Collin never lack esoteric appeal. If you are a wine lover, these singular, vinous, electric champagnes are not to be missed. They are rich yet precise, expressive yet elegant, exemplifying the inherent virtues of Champagne rarely delivered except in the finest examples.

Olivier Collin is a gifted winemaker and stardom has followed him quickly. Since his debut with vintage 2004, Collin continues to marry sumptuous power with effortless style, crafting more complex champagnes with every passing vintage.

Collin has crafted only single-vineyard champagnes since day one. All of the domaine’s vines are at least 30 years old, with the rest consisting of 45- to 60-year-old vines. Winemaking is as natural and non-interventionist as possible. All fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts, which can take a remarkably long time to complete. Both the alcoholic and malolactic fermentations are carried out in three- to six-year-old barriques, and the wine is neither fined nor filtered before bottling, which takes place in the fall after the harvest. Dosage level is always very minimal (nowadays, it is rarely ever more than 2.4 g/l) so as not to obscure the expression of terroir.

Olivier always expresses his vineyards with a unique voice, and never at the expense of pleasure and deliciousness. Indeed, some of my most memorable Champagne experiences had been triggered by a bottle of Champagne Ulysse Collin. Sometimes it is the intense stony minerality of Les Pierrières, at other times it could be the thirst-quenching (or is it thirst inducing) hedonism of Les Maillons that does it.

The 2014-designate cuvées — particularly Les Maillons and Les Pierrières — have proven their worth while Collin was in town last October: gregarious, exceptionally finessed and delicious. Apparently, we are not alone: critics agree. These are indeed head-turning, ravishing, turn-you-on champagnes.

Champagne Ulysse Collin has amassed a cult following since its inception in the early days. They are emblematic of the best of the contemporary grower Champagne movement: single-vineyard, single-variety, very limited in production and featured in the world’s best restaurants.

Both Les Maillons and Les Pierrières cuvées offered today are from the highly lauded 2018 disgorgements which contain equal part 2014 and 2013 harvests. A year on after disgorgement, they are entering a super tasty phase now. Drink or keep, we’ll leave it to you, but whatever you do, don’t miss these very special champagnes.

S$ 118 / 750 ML for 3-bottles or more
S$ 122 / 750 ML
100% Pinot Noir from Barbonne-Fayel, Côte de Sézanne. The soils in this sector are chalk mixed with heavy clay, without the silex found in Vert La Gravelle, and these pinot noir vines were planted in 1971. 2014 is the youngest vintage here, blended with 50% reserve wines from 2013.
“The NV Extra Brut Blanc de Noirs Les Maillons is another gorgeous Champagne from Olivier Collin. Rich and ample on the palate, the Maillons shows all the textural richness of Pinot from this impeccably farmed parcel of 50 year-old vines in Barbonne-Fayel. Kirsch, mint, chamomile and dried flowers flesh out in a creamy, voluptuous Blanc de Noirs full of personality. In this release, Les Maillons is equal parts 2014 and 2013. Dosage is 2.4 grams per liter.” Vinous 94 points

100% Chardonnay from the 40-year-old southeast-facing Les Perrières vineyard in the neighbouring Vert la Gravelle village in Coteaux du Petit Morin. The soil is rich in black silex which tends to produce wine with pronounced flintiness. 2014 is the youngest vintage here, blended with 50% reserve wines from 2013.
“Disgorged last year, Olivier Collin's superb NV Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Les Pierrières (2014) wafts from the glass with aromas of smoky citrus oil, crushed rocks, white flowers and a subtle top note of blanched almonds. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, tensile and searingly intense, with a vinous but tight-knit profile, superb concentration and depth at the core and a long, racy and undeniably mineral finish. I have already worked my way through half a case of this wine from my own cellar, and it continues to blossom and unwind with each month on cork. The 2014 base isn't as reserved and introverted as some vintages of Pierrières, and its purity and precision are already easy to appreciate.” WA 96 points
