open-quote Every wine produced by Benoît Lahaye should be bought without hesitation, a truly stunning range.
— CHAMPAGNE DISCOVERY

With the growing worldwide demand for these wines they can sometimes be a little difficult to find, but they are well worth the search, as Lahaye is rapidly becoming one of the top grower-producers in the Montagne de Reims.
— Peter Liem

I admit to be in deep love with his wine . . This is doubtlessly one of the finest producers in Bouzy, and readers shouldn’t miss the chance to try any one of his cuvées.
— Stephan Reinhardt, The Wine Advocate

The emphatic exuberance of Bouzy’s grand cru is personified in no finer form than Benoît Lahaye’s stunning champagnes.

Remarkably polished and undeniably delicious, they bridge the philosophical chasm between purist vinous Champagne and the deliberately composed classical school. Benoît’s cuvées are never austere in spite of soil driven purity and brevity of dosage. At the same time he’s such a skilled and thoughtful blender that even when he mixes two cépages or vineyards, the result is more generously terroir expressive than other single-vineyard champagnes manage to be.

Lahaye cares deeply about philosophy but considers results to be as important as his methods. There are things he does not compromise and viticulture is one. A passionate advocate of natural winegrowing, Benoît Lahaye has bottled estate Champagnes since 1996. He subsequently started working organically and became certified organic in 2007. He also uses various biodynamic treatments: using only his own compost with some organic manure as a complement, he applies various herb infusions to the vineyards - an almost homeopathic ethos.

Lahaye is one of the few growers in Champagne to own a horse, which he uses to plough much of his 4.5-ha estate. The land is worked thanks to Tamise, an Auxois working-horse along with two friendly donkeys who are on hand for a bit of additional support.

Benoît Lahaye’s 4.5 hectares of vineyards are situated in the Grand Cru villages of Bouzy and Ambonnay as well as the Premier Cru village of Tauxières. The plots are 90% Pinot Noir where the average age of the vines is 35-40 years. He also has a tiny plot of Chardonnay on the Côte des Blancs in the premier cru village of Vertus.

As with all quality-conscious producers, the grapes from each parcel are pressed separately. Vinification is mostly in oak fûts de chêne whilst the remainder is in temperature-regulated stainless steel tanks. Only indigenous yeasts are used and there is no chaptalisation unless in exceptional circumstances. Despite his choices of techniques, his Champagnes are neither oxidative nor overtly oaky in flavour. In fact, they are consistently slow to develop, typically needing ageing or plenty of air upon opening to show their best, yet they’re capable of tremendous complexity and intensity, as well as soil expression. Vinification lasts for 10 months where the wine is left on the lees without racking. Malolactic fermentation is sometimes allowed depending on the cuvée and there is no fining or filtration. Dosage is minimal, if at all used.

open-quote A very serious young wine grower, Benoît Lahaye practises a thoughtful biodynamic viticulture of the very highest standard. These are Champagnes with a real taste of their origins.
— Michael Edwards, THE FINEST WINES OF CHAMPAGNE

Lahaye’s wines are intense without being weighty, showing a vinous, concentrated character that clearly announces an emphasis on quality work in the vineyards. They’re always made from very ripe fruit, yet as with many naturally-grown wines, the dominant character is not one of fruit, but of terroir.

Lahaye creates vibrant, complex Champagnes, combining the ripe depth typical of the southern Montagne de Reims with an energetic expressiveness derived from high-quality viticulture. An understated demeanour cannot hide his passion for his craft and to make truly great wines. Lahaye always makes sure that he has achieved the best outcome possible for his Champagne and that the releases meet his high standards.

Champagne Benoît Lahaye has a cult following in the States and Japan, as well as a long list of loyal clientele of the top restaurants across Europe. With an annual production limited to 40,000 bottles meticulously placed in highly sophisticated markets across the globes, Lahaye’s champagnes are really hard to find. Moreover, the demand for his Champagne is unprecedented today, a situation not helped by the reasonableness of his prices in spite of the superlative quality he produces.

Blanc de Blancs Brut Nature (no-SO2 added)
S$ 150 / 750 ML
30 bottles
2,000 bottles made. 100% Pinot Meunier.
Blanc de Blancs is a new cuvée for Benoît Lahaye as he decided to no longer make the ‘Naturessence.’ He took this decision from a sense of “terroir purity”. This Blanc de Blancs is made exclusively from a vineyard in Voipreux planted in 1952, on the very limits of the Côte des Blancs between Vertus and Mesnil-sur-Oger. The clay soils give this wine its power and style, so Lahaye has truly achieved his goal of a pure terroir wine. It is broad yet with pure fruit delineation. No added sulfites. The base wines were from 2014 and 2015.

open-quote . . Le Jardin de la Grosse Pierre, a single-vineyard champagne made from a field blend of old vines, most of which were planted in 1923. The vines in Champagne usually average 30 years old and it is a rarity to have vines that are as old as 90 years. In 1952, Benoît’s grandfather replaced some dead vines by other varieties, some unknown or now forgotten. Combined with the age of the vines, this diversity gives the wine a great complexity and rare aromas. Until 2009, the wine made from this parcel was blended with wine from other parcels. After tasting it separately, Benoît recognized its unique character and decided to make a special cuvée from it.
