Burgundy vigneron to watch

The result is
concentrated but tensile wines that unfold slowly
and reward bottle age. I look forward to revisiting
more of their wines from bottle in the coming year.

Advocate
Tessier did very well indeed in the 2017 vintage –
lovely effortless balance and harmonious fruit – not
big and heavy wines – yet there is a lovely
concentration in the wines . .

A movement to return to sound viticulture has swept
throughout Burgundy. The new generation of well-traveled
vignerons has amassed broad experience working within and
out of the region, and shares the same passion to make
better wines. They understand climatic diversity and are
more ready to deal with it more effectively than their
predecessors ever did. Winemaking is, in general, less
contrived. Balance and elegance are paramount, as are
aromatic expressiveness and seductive textures.
Ageworthiness is now believed to be made in the vineyard
rather than in the cellar. This collective mindset has
completely revolutionised the types of Burgundy wines being
produced since the mid 2000s, at least among the most
conscientious domaines.
Pockets of dynamic young people have reinvigorated the scene
in the southern half of the Côte d’Or. They share the
resourcefulness and ambition of their northern cousins, in
fact even more. There’s never been a better time to drink
Pommard, Volnay and Aloxe reds — they can be ravishing and
luscious, even when they’re young — while the famous whites
from Meursault, Chassagne and Puligny have stepped up to the
next level of finesse and terroir-eloquence. These
prodigious young vignerons not only know how to make great
wines, they know how to make great delicious wines:
Armand Heitz (Heitz-Lochardet), Thibaud Clerget (Y
Clerget), Tomoko Kuriyama and Guillaume Bott (Chantereves)
and of course Arnaud Tessier, just to name a few.
I
make no secret of my adoration for the wines of Domaine
Tessier. Ever since I met and tasted with Arnaud
Tessier and his wife Catherine Guillin back in
2014, I knew we had found a rare gem. This is one of the
most notable names responsible for taking the Côte de Beaune
and its precious cache of incredible terroirs to
unprecedented glory.
Arnaud Tessier was born in Meursault and is a true
home-grown boy. At 22 years of age, he was thrust into the
driver’s seat when his father Michel passed away in 2005. He
was forced to take full charge with relatively little
experience. Thankfully, vineyard work was not new to Arnaud
as he had been helping out at the domaine since he was 14
years old. His wife Catherine, having worked for several
estates in Burgundy and abroad, assists Arnaud full-time to
run the domaine.
Catherine
Guillin, Arnaud’s better half who assists him so he
can spend all the time he needs in his vineyards
DOMAINE TESSIER spans across 7.5 hectares of
vineyards but produces only 20,000+ bottles a year
currently. The domaine owns some of Meursault’s best plots:
Bourgogne Chardonnay “Champ Perrier”, Meursault “Les
Casse-Têtes”, Meursault “Les Grands Charrons”,
Meursault 1er Cru “Le Poruzot Dessus”, “Les
Genevrières” and “Les Charmes Dessus”.
Like most progressive young vignerons of his generation,
Arnaud is convinced that the majority of the wine making
process is done in the vineyards. He follows organic
principles and leaves long branches on the vines to aerate
the vineyard and minimise disease and rot. Yields are
controlled by way of removing excess buds during the
flowering season. Arnaud works very long hours in the
vineyard to achieve perfection, regularly returning home
only late in the evening. He is the ultimate artisan, never
more at home than when amongst his vines; getting the raw
ingredients right is his main priority. Everything here is
done by hand.
Arnaud Tessier
spends long hours in his vineyards, returning home
only long after sunset
Arnaud has a clear vision for his domaine, crafting pure and
ethereal wines, new definitive examples of their respective
vineyards. There are no “ordinary” wines in this cellar in
the sense that there are no stark qualitative differences as
you move from regional to village and then premier cru
wines: every one is lovingly crafted, exuding maximum
refinement to the extent each terroir allows. Vinification
is gentle and unforced. New oak is kept at a minimum, around
10% for the villages and no more than 35% for the premiers
crus. But it is Arnaud’s sensitive touch that makes all the
difference. The wines are full of vitality, articulate but
never brazen, and highly drinkable. There is a special
quality to Tessier’s wine, a certain serenity, truthfulness
and strength. The fruits are transparent — the words
“diaphanous” and “filigreed” tend to repeat in my notes —
and silky. As we move up the cru ladder, we find
escalating intensity, florality and airiness.
Tessier’s wines express a paradigm of beauty that is
wholesome, faithful to its soils and reflects the
single-mindedness of its craftsman. For many, Tessier’s
wines are already considered amongst the finest of the
appellation. Steen Öhman thinks they rival the best of the
so-called Meursault “masters” (Coche, Lafon and Roulot). I
am a believer, although I would not compare Arnaud’s wines
to them because his approach and style is distinctly unique:
more pillowy and floral, held together with a steely thread
of a backbone.

![Tasting barrel samples of Tessier's 2017s](https://www.artisan-cellars.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/tasting_2017_tessier_in_HK.jpg)
Comparing with the 2014s at Tessier – the 2014 are
magnificent and have a lovely intense fruit, balance
and airy freshness. The 2017s are in my view
slightly lighter but perhaps even more balanced –
and are very charming with a special hedonistic
glow . . they will drink well.

Today, we are super excited to present our allocation of
Domaine Tessier’s vintage 2017. It is no secret by now that
2017 is an excellent, highly-lauded white Burgundy vintage.
In our tastings of Côte de Beaune whites from the vintage,
we found luminous fruit with a delectable delicacy. They are
almost ethereal in their aromatic articulation. Chez
Tessier, the wines are energetic and composed, mineral
precision abounds while the finish elongates with sappiness
and mouthwatering salinity. This is thrilling juice. Astute
Burgundy lovers should follow this address and no time is
better than now.

(from
a vineyard located in Puligny-Montrachet

lovely mineral expression in the nose with a
touch of citrus (grape). On the palate a
harmonious and charming fruit – more forward
and rewarding than the serious 2016.
Delightful expression of the fruit seems to
be the name of the game in this vintage – a Winehog award to this

“Aromas
of orchard fruits, beeswax and white flowers
introduce the 2017 Meursault Village, a

fruit and a bright line of animating
acidity.” WA 88-90 |

“Les Grand Charrons” 2017
|
S$ 78 + GST / 750 ML for
3-bottles or more
S$ 83 + GST / 750 ML
|
“Tessier
owns merely four ouvrées in this lieu-dit,
so the 2017 Meursault Les Grands Charrons is
one of the domaine's rarer bottlings, but
it's very attractive, and one of the more
precocious offerings too. The wine reveals
an expressive bouquet of honeyed orchard
fruit, beeswax, subtle smoke and dried white
flowers, followed by a medium to
full-bodied, elegantly textural palate
that's nicely rounded and complete,
underpinned by succulent balancing acids.” WA

S$ 86 + GST / 750 ML
|
“The
2017 Meursault Les Casses-Têtes is one of
the high points in the Tessier cellar this
year, unfurling in the glass with aromas of
citrus zest, crisp Anjou pear, fresh bread
and light reduction. On the palate, it's
medium to full-bodied, satiny and layered,
with a promisingly tight-knit core,
excellent energy and concentration and a
long, chalky finish. This will demand some
patience, but it shows superb potential.” WA

S$ 114 + GST / 750 ML

“The
Poruzot is showing its refined and charming
side in the 2017 vintage. This is certainly
a rather delicate Poruzot – both filigree
and harmonious. The nose shows lovely
harmonious fruit – nice density and length.
Will need a bit of time to unfold. (Drink

S$ 122 + GST / 750 ML
for 3-bottles or more
S$ 128 + GST / 750 ML
|
“The
Meursault Charmes is as always quite a step
up in intensity. It’s effortlessly refined
and very charming . with layers of fruit –
powerful mineral structure beneath as the
focusing element. On the palate intense pure
fruit focused by the intense minerality.
It’s airy and elegant – a truly charming
wine.” WH 93-94 |

S$ 135 + GST / 750 ML

“The
Meursault Genevrieres is elegant and
filigree – with a charming and attractive
almost perfumed nose of white orchard
fruits. Somehow more expressive and decadent
than the excellent Meursault Charmes. On the
palate effortless, elegant and focused, with
a very charming mid-palate fruit. A
delightful glass – rivalling the Meursault
Charmes!” WH 93-94 |
