Kikuhime
|
Original. Uncompromising. Venerable.
Legend.
|
|
The venerated Kikuhime Brewery, standing
strong with over 400-years of greatness
|
|
They are delicate, elegant, subtle
and complex. Some are broad with high
concentration. In style, they have huge diversity.
Some are fruity, some are floral, some are spicy and
some are rice-like.
— Elliot Faber, “Saké – The History,
Stories and Craft of Japan’s Artisanal Breweries”
. . Kikuhime is seeking out timeless
and authentic sake that isn’t affected by any trends
. . a saké beloved by particular persons, a drink
that’ll blow their minds. Kikuhime is not
inexpensive, and not for everyone. Having said that, if you are a
connoisseur of good sake, you have to try Kikuhime
at least once in your life.

The Kikuhime brewery continues its ascent to the top
of the saké hall-of-fame. It is without a doubt one of the
finest breweries in Japan and many who are first introduced
to them are amazed to find out that they produce no
Junmai Daiginjo. Their flagship, the mythical and
universally acclaimed Kikurihime may be a
Daiginjo, yet it sells for far more than most top Junmai
Daiginjos. It is a living proof that being a Junmai Daiginjo
does not make the saké better.
Kikuhime first opened its doors over 400 years ago in 1570
in the Ishikawa prefecture on the coast of the Sea of Japan
in the Chubu Region. Ishikawa is known for its fertile
rice-producing areas and is one of Japan’s premier saké
making regions, with most of its breweries having been in
existence for hundreds of years. What makes Kikuhime unique,
however, is that it insists on obtaining their rice from the
Hyogo prefecture instead. This is because head honcho Tatsuki
Yanagi believes that the best rice is grown there.
It is our personal commitment to search out and work with
small artisan saké breweries that are making the best, most
unique and authentic saké. Kikuhime clearly is in that
category. The Kikuhime Brewery is among the crown jewels of
the Artisan Cellars saké portfolio, a brewery where soul and
passion reign supreme.
Kikuhime’s sakés are anything but conventional. A legend and
a brew of biblical proportions. If you were to ask any saké
maker of note, he will tell you privately that he would have
loved to have had a tutelage under a toji master at
Kikuhime.
Today we are pleased to offer a comprehensive collection of
the iconic KIKUHIME brewery which spans from their
genre-defining Yamahais to their ridiculously
delicious Tokusen, multi-award winning Tsuru
No Sato, all the way through to their rarities,
Gin, Kurogin and Kikurihime,
all in-stock for your immediate pleasure. Saké explorers and
aficionados would not want to miss any of these.
